Director Resignation – Paula Skelton

The Club regrets to inform the membership that club Director, Paula Skelton, has decided to stand down from the Oatlands Golf Club Board of Directors effective immediately, for personal and health reasons.

Paula has served on the Clubs Board since 2021 and was also Ladies Captain from 2021 until the end of 2023. During this time Paula has worked tirelessly both in and out of the Board room, with the sole of objective of making Oatlands Golf Club the best that it can be.

Among many, many contributions, the work Paula has done in recent months assisting the Club to align the OGC Women’s Program with Golf Australia’s strategic initiatives for growing female participation in golf will be viewed in retrospect as absolutely imperative to the Clubs future and growing the game at OGC.

The Director resignation of Paula Skelton creates a casual vacancy on the Clubs Board of Directors. This vacancy will be filled as per the requirement of the Club’s Constitution in due course.

From the Course

Rainfall for the Week: 3.5mm,  Rainfall for 2024: 349.0mm, Dam: 100%,  Green Speed: 10.0 feet

Our contractors finished their involvement with the works on the 9th pond, 7th tee, and 11th ladies tee last Friday afternoon, with the last task being the placement of the large sandstone blocks around the inlet pipes at the 9th pond. The water in this pond had to be pumped out so that the contractors could ensure that the blocks were laid on a level base, so these blocks remain stable into the future. A heavy downpour of rain would be ideal now to refill this pond, but as usual it doesn’t rain when you want it to! Course staff now need to install the smaller sandstone blocks that were saved from around the old putting. These will be set on top of the existing blocks but up against the concrete path to ensure that any runoff water over the path doesn’t erode the soil in behind the blocks.

The turf on the 7th tee has taken root quickly and we were able to cut it for the first time at a higher height (25mm compared to 13mm that all other tees are cut at), with this tee top dressed and fertilised straight after this initial cut. We are planning to bring this hole/tee back into play on Monday.

With the contractors finished, we have started the process of fixing the track marks across the 1st fairway. These tracks were unavoidable as the contractors had to bring stockpiled clay across from the tip area on the 15th hole. Many members have suggested how we could’ve avoided these marks, but once I explain that the tipper truck made over 30 trips back and forward to the tip area, they realise that laying planks of wood or using plastic matting in front of the wheels just wasn’t possible.  The large indentations on the 1st fairway were rotary hoed to level and loosen the area before new soil was brought in and spread. Our Ventrac machine with the power rake attachment was then used to level and consolidate this import soil. New kikuyu turf will be laid across the 1st fairway on Friday, with couch to be laid at the right hand end of this prepared area near the new geohex path adjacent to the 8th tee. This couch will be covered in the green plastic mesh to protect it against wear. This repair work will continue across the 17th, 13th, 14th, and 15th fairways, but may vary depending on the degree of the damage. Some areas may only require verti draining and top dressing, while others will require the same as the 1st or even something in between these examples.

Back down at the 9th pond and the mound between the 8th gully, and the pond and the track marks along the concrete path to the 9th tee, will be rotary hoed and reshaped/ levelled out with new soil before new turf is laid. The area along this path has always been a roughed out surface, so this work will be a great improvement.

During one of the thunderstorms in the last fortnight, one of the large trees between the 7th and 8th fairways was hit by lightning, which brought down one of its large branches and in the process brought branches down from a few surrounding trees. The tree that was hit directly has already died and will create quite a mess with fallen leaf debris. We do have our tree contractors on-site Monday to remove a council approved tree near one of our neighbours properties on the 11th hole. We will ask them to remove the limbs from this dead tree as well (time permitting), otherwise it will be trimmed during the upcoming course closure for greens renovations.

Volunteers were on course again this week preparing bunkers in front of the competition on Monday morning, edging pathways, cutting up fallen limbs, weeding crabgrass weeds from tee complexes, divotting fairways, and clubhouse maintenance. Thank you to everyone who volunteered their time this week, your assistance is very much appreciated!

Have a great weekend and happy golfing!

The Course Team.

Rules of Golf – Abnormal Playing Conditions

Following the Interactive Rules Seminar on Wednesday 6th March, which saw over 40 members take part in the Oatlands specific Rules seminar, focused around drone photos of the 18 holes at Oatlands with a number of additional video resources from the R&A to compliment the presentation.

A summary video of the seminar is in production with the aim of publishing to the Club website over the coming months, in the meantime, the next few weeks of Enews will see a series of short form videos from the R&A published for the benefit of members.

The first of these videos covers Abnormal Course Conditions.

All Members and Guests must Report into the Pro Shop prior to Play

With the advent of the MiScore App, there has been a significant reduction in members and guests checking into the Pro Shop prior prior to play for both competition and social play.

All members and their guests are reminded of the requirement to report into the Pro Shop prior to play and to notify a member of staff that you have arrived so they can check you in.

This check in is a requirement for the effective management of timesheets and starting holes, charging of respective fees, checking compliance with dress standards, and it is also a requirement of our insurance that the Club has a record of who is on the golf course and when they commence their rounds.

The Board and Management thank you for your assistance and co-operation with this matter!

Pennant Update

Men’s Major Pennant

The Oatlands Major Pennant team headed to Cronulla GC for a must win match to keep them in contention for the finals.

With tight fairways and lightning fast greens, this was going to be a challenge but a challenge our boys were up for!

Christian Rees led us off at reserve and found his winning ways again with a strong 6/5 victory. Christian Fong had his maiden pennant start and did the Club proud with a 4/3 victory. Mister consistency, Charlie Kim loved the tight track and slick greens and posted a 2/1 victory to keep his unbeaten record in tack. Things were looking good!

The tide changed through the middle order with our boys coming up against some stiff competition with Roger Nakaad going down 5/4, Nathan Wareham going down 6/5 and Brad Hooper going down 5/3. Now we were up against it, time to show the Oatlands grit and determination.

Grant Lomas was 1 down with 2 to play, time to turn it on. He hit his second on 17 to 6 foot only needing par to win the hole and then calmly hit his shot on 18 to 15 foot and rolled the putt in for birdie and the win. It was now down to the iceman Will Reece.

Will was all square playing 17 where he hit his approach to 5 foot only needing par to win and then hit the green on 18 leaving himself a 40 footer for birdie. He hit his putt to 3 foot which was conceded for the victory winning 2up and giving us the team win 4/3.

A fantastic effort from the boys, we now need to win at home this weekend and hope Richmond loose away to qualify for the semi’s
