From the Course

Rainfall for the Week: 1.5mm,  Rainfall for 2024: 374.0mm, Dam: 100%,  Green Speed: 10.0 feet

The team are in the process of preparing for the upcoming greens renovations and subsequent course closure period. Greens were sprayed with an insecticide that controls Argentine Stem Weevil, as well as Billbug and Armyworm. Armyworm has been a major problem in home lawns this summer season with many members and residents reporting damage to their lawns. This pest isn’t a major pest of our course as we apply a residual insecticide to all fairways, rough lines, and green surrounds in early spring, with the residual control lasting for up to 6 months. I did notice some of these pests crawling across the practice green early on Saturday morning, so this week’s insecticide application will control any current active pests.

All greens will be fertilised when the team returns to work after the Easter long weekend, with this application designed to promote growth as we head into renovations and will speed-up recovery from the topdressing and aeration process. A fungicide application will be applied to greens late next week to provide protect against Pythium during and after the renovation works.

The 12th fairway has been renovated this week so that machinery could be tested and set up properly, and to also train new staff members on the operation of these machines. This fairway had the broom attachment on the Ventrac machine run across it on a 45 degree angle to remove the built- up layer of grass clippings from the growing season, with the fairway blown off afterwards. Next solid tines were used to aerate the surface to a depth of 150mm on our verti-drain machine, followed by dragging a steel drag mat across the surface to scratch out more grass clippings and drag out any loose material. The fairway was then mown and will be fertilised next week. The aeration with solid tines will be repeated across all fairways, and a decision on the brooming of surfaces will be made on a fairway by fairway case.

Whipper snippers were once again busy this week with all valve boxes identified across the course and then trimmed around so we don’t lose their location. Preparation work on the track marks also continued this week, with the turfing of these areas to be performed during the course closure period.

Volunteers were on course Monday morning cleaning and checking the practice nets, divotting fairways, and clearing out the 6th creek. Thank you gentlemen for your assistance this week, as always it is very much appreciated.

This weekend greens will be cut on Friday, Saturday, and Monday, with the dew removed from them on Sunday.

Have a great weekend and happy golfing!

The Course Team.

Two Holes in One on the same day for Two Lucky Ladies

The incredible performances on the golf course by the OGC ladies continued today with two holes in one in this morning’s competition. Jenny Park recorded an ace on hole 9, while Anna Kim recorded an ace on the 5th hole. Well done ladies on two perfect shots!!!!

OGC’s Undefeated Pennant Players for 2024

In the recent Men’s Major Pennant season and Ladies Grade Pennant season, OGC had a player from each team go through the season undefeated, an acheivement recognised by Golf NSW with an undefeated Medal.

Proving that hardwork and practice payoff, Charlie Kim went though the Men’s Major Pennant divisional rounds undefeated in 6 matches.

And in her first season of Grade Pennant for OGC, Penny Deehan went through the Ladies Grade season also undefeated in 6 matches.

Well done to both players on a tremendous season that produced a semi-final result for the men’s side and Pennant win for the ladies side.

Captain’s Corner – Coaching / Advice

We are often confronted with situations where assistance may be provided to fellow players during the course of a round of golf.

It is very important that we understand the difference between providing assistance and providing advice.

Assistance may include providing clarity of a Rule, and the location of things on the course such as the green, bunkers or another players ball.

However, a player cannot provide advice to another player, such as, but not limited to, choosing a club, making a stroke or advising how to play a hole during a round of golf, or advising someone of the wind strength before a shot is made.

Several other examples of providing advice could include, making a comment as to a persons club selection, loud enough for another player to hear who has a similar stroke. Indicating to another player the suggested line of a putt on the putting green is also deemed to be providing advice. Offering a comment to another player, suggesting the player take an unplayable penalty is also deemed advice.

For clarity, a player must not give advice or ask for advice, during a round. If a player asks for advice and another player provides that advice, both players are liable for a general penalty

If a player provides or asks for advice a general penalty applies for each offence. A general penalty is two strokes.

Good Golfing,

Colin McRae
Club Captain

Buggies Blocking Carts in Front of Clubhouse

Members and their guests are asked to be mindful of where buggies are left in-front of the Clubhouse (golf course side) at halfway and after golf to ensure there is room for golf carts to use the pathway with plenty of room to spare.

There have been a number of incidents whereby carts have been blocked by buggies and even a few where buggies have been damaged by carts.

Buggies that are left blocking the path will be moved by staff to allow cart access in both directions.
