From the Course

Rainfall for the Week: 23.5mm,  Rainfall for 2024: 273.5mm, Dam: 100%,  Green Speed: 9.5 feet

Mother Nature did her best to wreck our plans this week with the rain coming earlier than forecast on Tuesday. The rain was predicted to arrive around 3pm on Tuesday afternoon which would’ve been ideal, but instead the heavens opened at 5am with the course receiving 22mm in 2 hours. The blue tarps that we had in place over the weekend did save the team and a few hearty volunteers, a lot of repair work, with the areas outside of the tarps being damaged and eroded by the heavy rainfall.

The course team, with the help of the volunteers, were able to repair the damage and still lay all the turf during a very busy morning. The rolls have been pinned down to ensure they stay in place while the turf establishes and sends its roots down. The 9th hole will remain out of play for the weekend and return to play on Monday. However, the 19th hole will still be in play next week as we will be taking the 7th hole out while the contractor works on the new sandstone retaining wall which will replace the timber logs and reconstructing the tee pads into one large pad at the height of the existing front tee pad.

All greens have been mini hollow cored this week to remove built up mat and thatch from surfaces. This will improve infiltration rates of these playing surfaces and benefit disease management in the greens. Greens remain healthy and resilient despite the constant high humidity weather conditions we have been experiencing since early November.

All tee complexes were sprayed with growth regulator this week to keep these surfaces to the expected presentation standards. A few of our older bunkers were GUR on Wednesday and Thursday because they were either holding water from the rain on Tuesday or needed silt removed from them. The silt removal will be performed on Friday and all bunkers should be back in play for the weekend.

Our volunteers switched days this week so that they were fresh for turf laying on Tuesday morning. And fresh they had to be, as it was a difficult assignment laying the turf down the slope of the 9th green surrounds, and around the edge of the pond. We only had one slip but due to some great acrobatic and self-taught commando rolling skills, Draino was able to save himself from falling into the water! What a great bunch of blokes our volunteers are, and I appreciate their assistance every week.

We will be cutting greens both mornings this weekend.

Have a great weekend and happy golfing!

The Course Team.

New Content Ideas for the Weekly Enews

The weekly Enews has been produced in its current format for almost 5-years now with readership of the publication averaging 60-70% of membership (though if you ask our Course Superintendent you are only reading his Course Update).

By industry standards, that level of engagement is very good, however we would love to increase it to the point where all members are engaging with the articles. To that end, we would love to hear from our members regarding what you would like to see in the weekly Enews.

As such, we encourage you to provide feedback on potential regular features, and also to provide specific content and stories that you come across and think the broader membership would like to see.

Please provide feedback and ideas to admin@oatlandsgolf.com.au

The first two instalments of the new Nine, Wine & Dine in November and December 2023 have been a fantastic success with bookings near capacity with members and their guests.

The two remaining events for the 2023-24 season will be held Friday 23rd February and Friday 15th March, with timesheets now open for members to make bookings and to invite guests at no additional charge.

Competition play is optional, but for those playing the single stableford, we have prizes for the men’s and women’s winners and runner ups and an NTP. The 9-holes played will be holes 1-7, 17 & 18.

Tee times will be available from 4pm – 5:30pm with a two course modified a la carte menu after golf.

Bookings are now open, and we hope to see you there!

NSW Amateur and Champion of Champions – Grant Lomas

The 2024 NSW Amateur Championship was played last week in conjunction with the NSW Champion of Champions at Belmont GC & Pacific Dunes GC with 2023 Oatlands Club Champion, Grant Lomas making the trip up to Newcastle to play in the event.

Beginning the 36 hole stroke play rounds at the easier layout of the 2 courses, Grant’s 1 over par round at Belmont had him lying in a tie for 30th and inside the top 32 cutline that advances to the matchplay portion of the event. A few bad holes on day 2 at the tougher Pacific Dunes course meant that Grant finished the stroke play 10 over par and tied 78th out of the field of 194 for the Men’s Medal and 17th in the NSW Club Champion of Champions event.

New Frozen Meal Menu – Now Single Serve – Available from Monday 12th February

The OGC Kitchen has just prepared a new range of Frozen Takeaway Meals for members to enjoy. In response to feedback from many of our members who purchase these meals, we are trialling the new menu in singles serves. It is hoped that these will make the meals cost effective to purchase for one person, and also reduce wastage and cooking time at home.

We hope you enjoy the new menu and encourage members to provide feedback on the single serving sizes once you have tried them.

How to Care for your Lithium Buggy Batteries

With the recent lithium battery fires at a number of Golf Clubs around the country forcing Club’s (including Oatlands) to prohibit the storing of lithium batteries for stored buggies, MGI have put together some useful material on how to maintain your battery to reduce risk at home.

The 5-minute video and web link below provide valuable information on the care and maintenance of your lithium batteries to reduce risk and increase battery life.
