From the Course

Rainfall for the Week: 4.0mm,  Rainfall for 2023: 561.5mm, Dam: 100%   Green Speed: 10.5 feet

The course team has been a little light-on this week with staff Annual Leave overlapping one another, and our apprentices returning to TAFE to further their knowledge of the trade. Despite these reduced numbers, the team has been busy around the course.

One of the tasks that staff have performed this week is reducing the amount of sand that has built up on the high faces of the bunkers in an effort to stop balls plugging on the faces. This work was completed in the front left bunker at the 1st, front right of the 3rd, front left and middle of the 5th, and the right hand side bunker at the 13th. Once this sand is removed from the face, it is spread evenly over the base of the bunker and then compacted with the plate compactor in an effort to reduce the likelihood of the dreaded fried egg lie in these bunkers.

The spraying of winter grass weeds in our collars and couch surrounds continued this week with the 1st, 4th, 6th and 13th greens completed. The results of this spraying can now be seen around the 7th, 17th and 18th greens with a clearly defined green edge being seen.

The team has also erected a protective screen adjacent to the 11th women’s tee for them to stand behind while their male playing partners are hitting from the tee behind them. For those members that don’t think this was needed, it was hit 5 times in the first 3 hours that it was up!

Our greens remain very true with speeds slightly affected by a fertiliser application that required watering in after it was applied. This small amount of irrigation softens the surface which in turn reduces the green speed slightly. We are just over 4 weeks away from Spring greens renovations, so we will be performing some maintenance practices to the greens in the lead up to the renovations so that the greens recover as quickly as possible. These maintenance practice will be fungicide and fertiliser applications and won’t impact play or playing conditions too much.

Our volunteers were on course Monday morning performing a bunker run for the competition players before cleaning and repairing the practice nets, as well as finishing the mulching of the area on the right hand side of the 11th fairway. Thank you gentlemen for all your efforts, everyone appreciates your valuable contribution each week!

Greens will be cut on Saturday with only the dew being removed from them Sunday.

Have a great weekend and happy golfing!

The Course Team.

Ricky Fang goes back to back at JNJG State Age Championship

Oatlands GC junior member Ricky Fang has gone back to back in the under 10 years age category of the Jack Newton Junior Golf Foundation Age Championships at Lynwood Country Club on July 12th – 14th.

At 9yrs of age, Ricky recorded scratch scores of 86, 83 and 80 to win the event by 7-shots.

Anyone who has played the difficult Lynwood layout will know how impressive this is, let alone for a 9-year old.

Well done Ricky, we are all very proud of your continued development and achievements!

Mixed Foursomes Championships – Sunday 6th August

Sunday 6th August will play host to the Club’s Annual Mixed Foursomes Championships. This 36-hole event under the alternate shot format of foursomes is one of the most challenging and rewarding on the Club’s golfing programme.

The timesheet for the event will open on Saturday 29th July, however members are encouraged to plan ahead and organise partners prior to the timesheet opening.

Members are also reminded that the Conditions of Play for this event dictate that players wishing to be eligible for the gross event and need to ride in a cart, are required to get special approval for the use of a cart. This includes those members with a standard medical cart approval.

Some key Conditions of the event are listed below along with a list of last years winners:

ADDITIONAL CONDITIONS

must be recorded on the card.
• Handicap is the aggregate of the team handicap divided by two
• The format is a Stroke event played with a partner, and using only one ball.
• The partners are required to hit off from alternate tees. In the morning round male members hit off

• Once a player has teed off, the partners strike the ball alternately until the hole is completed. This

Saturday BBQs Cancelled

Members are advised that the trial of the Saturday BBQs for shotgun starts has been cancelled for a number of reasons.

While it is a service we would ultimately like to offer members, the combination of the cost to run the BBQ, when the Club already offers a sandwich hut and bistro menu from 11am, and also limited staff availability owing to strong Club and private event bookings requiring staff resource allocation from the limited pool of F&B staff available, make the weekend BBQ unfeasible.

This is one of the primary reasons that a three meal a day food offering has been negotiated as part of the new Clubhouse, to be subsidised by Strata Fees, as our current operating model does not allow for these types of services to be provided consistently.

We thank those members that supported the BBQ and will continue to try different initiatives and implement those that are successful on a longer-term basis.
