From the Course

Rainfall for the Week: 29.0mm,  Rainfall for 2023: 472.5mm, Dam: 100%   Green Speed: Renovations

Autumn greens renovations were performed this week under very favourable weather conditions. The sunny days are perfect for drying the sand that is applied to the greens after the coring process. The drier the sand is, the easier it is to get the sand down into the open core holes.

Getting the correct amount of sand spread over each green isn’t a simple process, as there isn’t an algorithm or measurement to determine the correct amount. Therefore, extra sand must be applied to greens if there are open cores after the first sand application and initial rub in. If core holes are left open, greens will dry out quicker in those areas and this can create uneven playing conditions and be difficult to manage. Once all the greens have had the sand rubbed into the core holes, fertiliser and amendments are applied and washed into the surfaces with irrigation or rainfall.

The coring and clean-up process is labour intensive, and it is made so much easier with the valuable assistance of our very strong volunteer team. Our volunteers provided 3 full days during this renovation/ course closure period and achieved a great deal including:

-Painting all tombstones, soil bins and seats
-Refurbishing the exit area of the 1st tee path
-Practice net repairs
-Painting of car park lines and speed humps at the 9th tee
-Painting tee markers
-Spreading of cores from greens in worn areas
-Oiling the notice boards

Thank you gentlemen for a very busy 3 days, with plenty of banter thrown in as well!

The course team has moved sand around in bunkers to ensure that sand is located in the correct areas of each bunker. We have also started to aerate fairways using solid tines which doesn’t remove a core but leaves a hollow in the fairway surfaces to allow air and water movement through the soil profile. The fairway surface is disturbed during this process, but once the fairway is mown it settles back down quickly.

The problem puddling area in the main car park has been resolved during the course closure, with Villi excavating out the existing asphalt and replacing it with new concrete. The drainage pits have also been realigned to sit better with the concrete, so there will be no more puddling occurring in the car park. Thanks very much to Villi for his work with this project.

There will be no cutting of greens over the weekend due to renovations.

Have a great weekend!

Mothers Day High Tea – Sunday 14th May

Mothers Day at OGC will look a little different to previous years with a High Tea style event for members and guests to spoil their Mothers.

Bookings are available via the Club website and we hope to see as many members as possible celebrating this wonderful occasion at Oatlands GC.

Minors (under 18yrs) in the Clubhouse

Oatlands Golf Club has one of the largest junior programmes in Sydney with over 100 members in our Junior Development Programme.

With school holiday’s upon us, many of these young members have been utilising the Club. This has resulted in feedback and enquiries with regard to the Club’s policy and license requirements around Minors (under 18yrs) accessing the Clubhouse.

The following are the main aspects of the Club policy and license as they relate to clubhouse access by minors:

  • Minors may access the Clubhouse at any time under the direct supervision of an adult
  • Minors may only approach the bar in the direct company of an adult
  • Minors may access the Clubhouse as part of sporting related activities – This means they may sit with their group post golf but may not approach the bar unaccompanied

Members, and in particular, the parents or guardians of Junior and Junior Development members, should be aware of these requirements and ensure that no minors access the clubhouse unsupervised. Members who bring children, who are not members to the Club, must ensure those children are under direct supervision at all times.

Breaching these requirements could result in disciplinary action under the Club’s Constitution.

The Club’s policy and license requirements have been reinforced to clubhouse staff, who have been instructed to actively address any breaches that arise.

We thank you in advance for your co-operation in ensuring the Club’s compliance with regard to this matter.

Members Property in Locker Rooms

Regrettably, there has been a reported incident of member property going missing from the Club Locker Rooms.

While members should not leave equipment or items unattended outside of lockers, with recent rain it has not been unusual for members to leave wet equipment in the locker hanging areas or on top of lockers to dry before storing in individual lockers.

Items left unattended such as these should not be removed by anyone other than the owner of the items.

Intermittently, approximately every 1-2 months, Club staff will gather up any loose items and place them on a central table in the respective locker rooms for collection prior to disposal of any unclaimed items.

If members notice any unusual activity in the locker rooms relating to suspected theft, please report the matter to the Club’s General Manager, Sam Howe, gm@oatlandsgolf.com.au.

MiScore Dual Signature Submission

Golf Australia today have advised the removal of COVID19 Rules to conclude by the end of April 2023. This will affect OGC’s current self-score submission method.

To comply with these requirements, the MiScore App will be amended to have the player’s marker record the scores and submit at the conclusion of each round. This will include capturing both player and markers signatures prior to score submission.

Once implemented, for a pairing whom both players score via the app, they will record each other’s score, sign and submit.

In the circumstance of a pairing whereby only one player is using the app, the app user will need to source a physical scorecard to provide to their marker.

MiClub will action this change to the MiScore App between 24th and 28th April, which will be applied in an update to the system during the evening so it doesn’t affect daily competitions. This will ensure the deadline of 1 May 2023 is achieved, as per notice from Golf Australia.
