Ladies Foursomes Champions Crowned on another Wet Day

After the scheduled first round of the Ladies Foursomes Championships was cancelled last week, the event was reduced to 18 holes to be played Thursday 21st July.

While the weather for the first and only round was far from ideal, over 50 ladies contested the event across the three grades.

The winners from the day were:

  • Foursomes Championship: Paula Skelton & Amy Kim – 88
  • B Grade Foursomes Championship: Leonie Fackrell & Jin Kim – 108
  • C Grade Foursomes Championship: Kam Chee Kim & Daniella Cordina – 126

From the Course

Rainfall for the Week: 20.5mm,  Rainfall for 2022: 1,636.5   Dam: 100%   Green Speed: 8.5 feet

The rain has returned and once again the course is very wet under foot. The heavy downpours that hit the course during the Women’s Foursomes on Thursday, changed playing conditions very quickly, with putting surfaces going under water several times throughout the day, even after the recent verti-draining of all these surfaces.

As mentioned in a post to the Oatlands Members Facebook page on Thursday, we are trying our best to allow medical carts on the course as much as possible, but we ask that areas that are marked up with muddy wheel marks please be avoided, and all traffic walking or driving from the 3rd green to the 5th tee to use the right hand side rough line of the 4th hole whilst it is out of play. This 4th hole will remain out of play for the time being as the top section of this fairway is one of the wettest areas of the golf course, and balls will just simply plug too easily and be lost.

Extra caution should also be taken when walking down any slopes around the course, as these are slip hazards under the current playing conditions. There is inherent risk in playing golf, as in all sports, and players utilise the golf course at their own risk and therefore should be extra diligent in the current conditions.

Our greens have recently been affected by a fungal root disease known as Pythium Root Rot. As the name indicates, this disease attacks the root system of the plant, with the prolonged wet conditions and no sub-surface drainage in the older greens making conditions favourable for this disease to develop. The 2nd, 5th, 6th and 15th while all are now 20 plus years old, have not been damaged to the same extent by the disease as the older greens, because they have proper sub-surface drainage systems. All greens, on course, have been impacted to a greater degree than the new putting and chipping greens, built recently to USGA specification which includes industry recommended drainage. While this weather event is not normal, it is quite likely that events of this type will happen with greater frequency moving forward. This highlights the benefit of new greens with adequate sub-surface drainage. Several fungicide applications have been applied to all greens over the past 2 weeks to control the infection. Some damage to putting surfaces has resulted, and recovery will be slowed due to the on-going wet and cold weather conditions. Our Spring greens renovations will help the recovery, with the cores that are removed from the greens during this process being replaced with fresh sand. Seed will also be applied to surfaces to assist with surface coverage in the bare areas that have resulted from this disease.

The mowing of green surrounds and selected fairways was performed earlier in the week in preparation of the forecasted rain. Tree stumps from recent dead tree lopping have been ground down and filled with soil.

Our Volunteers were back on course Monday morning performing a bunker run before the competition, continuing to undercut the trees along the left hand side of the 15th hole, trimming fairway sprinkler heads and clubhouse maintenance. Thank you gentlemen for all your assistance once again this week!

Enjoy the weekend!

Captain’s Corner – Bunker Rakes

Over the past couple of weeks, there appears to have been a significant increase in the number of rakes left in the bunkers with the handle outside the bunker, as shown in the photograph.

It is Oatlands policy that rakes must be left in the base of the bunker with the rake pointing in the direction of the hole, as shown in the photo.

Can I please ask all members to apply this policy and advise other members who may not be aware of this requirement.

Regards,

Colin McRae

Club Captain

Divots Washed Out by Recent Rain – WE NEED YOUR HELP!

The volume of rainfall over recent weeks has had the unfortunate effect of washing out all divots that have been diligently filled by golfers.

As such, we are calling on all members to please spend additional time on each hole emptying your sand bucket into unfilled divots. Filling these divots back to the level of the surrounding turf allows that surrounding turf to grow over the divot.

This extreme weather event at the beginning of winter has the potential to have a lasting impact on the condition of the golf course and every little bit of additional assistance in repairing the damage will shorten the recovery time.

Members are encouraged to keep your bucket in your hands while walking the fairways between shots and empty it on every hole. If we all do this, the course will be given it’s best chance to overcome the rain damage and this will allow our course staff and volunteers to focus on bigger items requiring attention.

We thank you in advance for your assistance.

Regards,

Col McRae
