From the Course

Rainfall for the Week: 1.0mm,  Rainfall for 2022: 1,313.0   Dam: 100%   Green Speed: 10.0 feet

Members will be aware of the two large trees that were hit by lightning during the wet weather period, with these trees near the 6th and 16th fairways dying because of this direct strike. Over the past month, we have also lost several other trees throughout the course as a result of the prolonged wet soil conditions, which has been detrimental to these trees overall health. The team has cut down these smaller dead trees to tidy up the course appearance. The stumps will be ground out in the coming weeks and backfilled with soil.

Another larger tree has also died near the 17th tee path entry which would be from a nearby lightning strike that hit a tree next to it about 12 months ago. It is not uncommon for nearby trees to also suffer; such is the power of these lightning strikes. This tree is too big for the course team to cut down, so it will be removed when we get the tree contractors in to remove the other two lightning strike trees when the course is dry and firm enough to have the trucks driving across the course safely without damaging our surfaces.

The team has also performed some repair work to several green edges during the week. Whilst controlling winter grass weeds in our collars, this chemical has moved in the soil profile or slightly over sprayed onto some of our green edges. This week, team members have transplanted strips of turf from our nursery green onto edges of the 4th, 5th, 6th, 12th, 14th, 17th, and 18th greens.

The team has also completed the task of removing all the old bunker lining and drainage material from the stockpiled waste product on the 8th flyover. This sand based material can now be used to construct some minor mounding on the 7th hole, and also be incorporated into some flyover areas to smooth these surfaces out.

Our volunteers were on course Monday morning performing a bunker run before the competition, edging and blowing paths, cleaning and replacing practice mats, and cleaning up the tree line along the roadway of the 15th hole. Thank you gentlemen for all your efforts each week, the course staff and your fellow members appreciate everything you do!

Enjoy the Weekend

The Course Team.

QPC&C Renews Sponsorship of the Tiger Tee Challenge

The Club is pleased to announce that QPC&C Quantity Surveyors and Project Managers, have continued their naming rights sponsorship of the Club’s Tiger Tee Challenge for 2022-23.

This will be the fourth year of sponsorship of this event by QPC&C and company Director Tony Sassine, which has predominantly coincided with the Covid pandemic and subsequent lockdowns and restrictions that have prevented the normal flow of golf. Despite this, QPC&C have remained committed to the Club and this event, and the QPC&C Tiger Tee Challenge now sees over 100 entrants mostly Friday’s.

On behalf of the Club and all its members we thank QPC&C for their ongoing partnership with the Oatlands GC and we look forward to continuing to grow this event together.

QPC&C specialise in Construction Cost Planning and Project Management, a business model that sets them apart from traditional Quantity Surveyors.

Captain’s Corner

There have been several questions raised in relation to the green matting that has been placed to the right hand side of the first green, leading to the path, as to whether relief can be taken if your ball is on this matting.

This green matting appears in a number of places on the golf course and is deemed to be an immovable obstruction in terms of Rule 16.1. Therefore, relief may be taken by the player in terms of Rule 14.3, being the nearest point of full relief, not nearer the hole, in the general area.

With winter conditions upon us and the change in preferred lies to shortly mown surfaces only, there have been questions raised as to the interpretation of what does closely mown surfaces include.

Closely mown surfaces are those areas that are cut to fairway length or lower. This includes all fairways and collars and aprons. It does not include green surrounds or bunker surrounds. You may find a situation where your ball rests on a spot that is very thin or bare, but not on the fairway or the collar or apron, and therefore no preferred lie is allowed.

I trust this clarifies a couple of situations that have been raised with myself.

Hospitality Staff Required to Join to the OGC Team

OGC is looking to add to our friendly and enthusiastic bar and hospitality service team over the coming month.

The Hospitality Industry has been one of the most impacted by the well publicised labour shortage occurring in most industries at the moment, and as such, we are calling on our greatest resource, our members, to assist in finding our next hospitality superstars.

Food & Beverage hospitality experience would be beneficial, but not essential, as full training will be provided and we are more interested in enthusiastic and motivated people to join the team. A Responsible Service of Alcohol certificate is required, however, the Club can put suitable applicants through the one day training course to gain this certification.

Children / family members are welcome to apply and will be considered on merit.

The Registered Club’s Award that our staff are employed under, have some of the best employment conditions going around, and with the FWC recently announcing a 5.2% increase to the Registered Club’s Award, this is a great opportunity for university students looking for casual work, or those looking at pursuing a career in hospitality.

If you know of anyone looking to join our hospitality team, please have them contact Clubhouse Manager, Karah Chapman, clubhouse@oatlandsgolf.com.au or phone the Club direct, (02) 9630 4444.

Club Dining Events – Late Cancellations and Arrival Times

Oatlands GC run a number of Club Dining events each month and also annual events such as presentation dinners. These events are well supported and popular with our members and guests.

For some time, the Club has had a 24 hour cancellation policy, whereby cancellations made less than 24 hours in advance are subject to the cancellation fee. This policy has not been implemented over the last 2 years due to the unpredictable nature of the Covid-19 pandemic, and the justifiable reasoning for late cancellations.

Now that life has returned to what seems to be the ‘new normal’, and with significant pressure on staffing levels and food costs, the Club will again be implementing the 24 hour cancellation policy, and respectfully ask that all members booked for Club Dining events that are unable to attend, please cancel no less than 24 hours in advance. Cancellation after this time will be subject to the cancellation fee.

Along with late cancellations, we would also ask all members and their guests booked in for Club Dining events to please be mindful of the time they have booked and arrive to be seated at this time. Like most hospitality venues, Oatlands GC is currently operating with a significant staff shortage in the Clubhouse (Bar and Kitchen) and the staggered booking times have been configured to provide our hospitality team with the windows required to plan and execute the service delivery standards our members and their guests have come to expect. Late and early arrivals result in congestion that impacts this standard and the overall experience of other diners.

We thank you in advance for your understanding and co-operation.
