From the Course

Rainfall for the Week: 14.0mm Rainfall for 2020: 998.5mm   Dam: 90%   Green Speed: 9.5 feet

Plenty of work has happened on the course this week in the lead up to the 1st round of the club championships this weekend. The mowers and spray carts have been busy all week, as well as the blower and vacuum trying to keep on top of the constant debris from the daily winds.

The weekend rain has encouraged growth on all of our playing surfaces with fairways being mown twice this week, and the first application of growth regulator being applied to selected fairways on Friday morning. The growth regulator helps the grass to bind and produces a better playing surface and also assists the plant to deal with weather / heat stress.  Green surrounds have been mown, and a full cut of roughs has also been completed.

The spray carts have been spraying weeds and winter grass in all tee complexes this week, with these weeds starting to yellow off in colour already. Tee banks will be mown on Friday to tidy their appearance, and all collars, aprons and tees have been mown.

As a result of this busy spraying and mowing schedule, we have made small progress on the 5th bunkers this week. We have 2 bunkers prepared for turfing next Tuesday with a fair amount of work lowering down some increased faces from play over the years (see video below).

The bunkers on the 4th are settling in well, and members are reminded that they are GUR and we ask that no one plays from this new sand. If members need to retrieve their ball, can they please enter the bunker at the lowest point and not walk down or up the steep face part of the bunker.

Tree contractors were on course during the week cutting down the dead tree on the 11th hole, and another dead one above the 10th tee. Their trucks left some wheel marks behind but this couldn’t be avoided. The course staff have marked these areas as GUR while they recover.

Our volunteers were back on course Monday morning, raking bunkers before the member’s competition, continued repairing tree guards, trimming and cleaning drainage pits, and helped clean up some low limbing of tree branches after the course staff. As always, your assistance is much appreciated gentlemen!

Have good weekend!

The Course Team

Five after Five – The Doer Cup

The Club’s popular Five after Five series will return on Friday 23rd October 2020 and run fortnightly until Friday 18th December.

This popular series is hosted by Rodney (Doer) Walsh and is a great way for members who don’t play regular competition golf to play a short form competition without the pressure of a full 18 holes and alongside members who play regular competition golf. Each event includes a 5 hole stableford (scoring is optional) followed by a casual dinner and presentation of prizes (a fabulous array of whatever Rodney can beg, borrow and steal from around the Club, with the tackiest prizes also the most prestigious to win).

Timesheets for all Five after Five fixtures are now open on the following dates;

    • Friday 23d October
    • Friday 6th November
    • Friday 20th November
    • Friday 4th December
    • Friday 18th December

Spaces are limited so book early to avoid disappointment.

Pennant Update

With low Covid case numbers in NSW, the NSW Health Department has eased restrictions on inter-zone sports activities and as such the following Pennant competitions have been approved by Golf NSW to proceed;

Super Senior Pennant – To re-commence on 6th October at 10:30am.

Encourage Shield – Commencing Sunday 11th October,  Click here for the 2020 Encourage Shield Draw

Major Pennant – At the time of writing no decision on the outstanding Major Pennant matches at the semi-final stage has been made, however, it is expected these will resume in late October or early November.

Course Care – Repairing Pitchmarks

With the course renovation recently completed and the warm weather arriving on cue, our course and greens are looking fantastic ahead of the upcoming Mens and Ladies Club Championships.

As such, members are reminded of their obligation to repair pitchmarks on all greens. The video below (which has been published previously) displays the correct method for repairing a pitchmark. If all members repaired their own pitchmark and one other on every green our greens would be perfect.

Indoor Simulator – Coming Soon

A few weeks back, we notified members that the Club had purchased a new launch monitor and indoor simulator (video re-posted below) and that the simulator would be available as of today. Unfortunately, the launch monitor had a fault and had to be returned back to the manufacturer. As such, we are now hoping the indoor simulator will be ready for launch in-conjunction with our first Five after Five event of the season on Friday 23rd October. We apologise for the inconvenience.

Smoothing Bunker Prior to Playing a Shot – Not Allowed

Members are reminded that while preferred lies are in play in bunkers to avoid the necessity for rakes, it is a breach of the Rules of Golf to smooth out the surface of the bunker prior to taking a preferred lie.

Upcoming Member and Guests Events

The Club has a range of Member Events planned for the month ahead that we hope you will join us for and bring along friends and family;

September – October Bistro on Bettington

Friday 16th October – Korean BBQ Night (Fully Booked)
