Personality Profile – George Isaac (Club President)

George has been a member of OGC for 14 years. He is a regular golfer on Wednesday’s and Saturday’s and when possible, on Sunday with his wife Linda. He is currently playing on a handicap of 13 having reached a career low handicap of 11. George’s best score at Oatland’s is 77 and his golfing goal is to attain a single figure handicap, “for at least one round”.

George has been on the Board of OGC for 8 years and was passed the baton of Presidency by John Carey in October 2018. His passion for the Club is evident by his 10 years as manager of the Club’s Encourage Shield team.

When not at OGC, George is busy working as a Chartered Accountant with 7 partners and 75 staff. His hobbies away from golf are fitness boot camp and travelling. He has 3 children with wife Linda, no grandchildren (yet).

George has a regular playing group on Saturday, however he tries to play with as many different members as possible on Wednesday, so if you see a space next to his on the timesheet, he would love to have you join him for a game.

Limited Playing Membership Category – Name Change

The Membership Committee and Board have recently approved a change in name for the Limited Playing Membership category to Lifestyle Membership. It is believed that this better represents the benefits of this category which has a limit on competition play only, not on social play.

From the Course

Rainfall for the week: 5.0mm          Rainfall for 2019: 164mm                 Dam: 80%        Green Speed 10.0 feet

This week, the team has been busy working on repairing the bare areas on the 17th fairway. On Monday, with the help of the volunteers, we cut out areas totalling 475m2 in size that continually die back at this time every year. As we were removing the turf, we found a lot of beetle larvae in the soil. These larvae can be either African Black Beetle or Argentinian Scarab Beetle. African Black beetle tends to cause damage earlier in the summer season, and the Argentinian Scarab later in the season. We believe that the larvae we are finding this week are Argentinian Scarab however tests to confirm this will be conducted. Tech notes on this pest say that you only need 4 of these larvae in a 1m2 area to see the type of damage to turf that we are witnessing.

Treatment of this pest has commenced in fairways, intermediate roughs and green surrounds. A knockdown insecticide is being used to control both the larvae in the ground and any adults of the Argentinian Scarab and African Black beetle. A such, members may have noticed a lot of dead beetles on the 12th, 13th, 15th and 17th fairways this week.

This weekend, greens will be cut Friday, cut and rolled on Saturday, and the dew removed on Sunday.

Enjoy the weekend!

Ladies Update

Presidents Cup

Congratulations to Kathy Lim, who beat Paula Skelton on the 17th hole to win 2/1 to take out the Presidents Cup for 2019.  Paula was defending champion and was keen to win again but Kathy had other ideas and played some great golf. The match was played in great spirit, so well done to both ladies!

Major Pennant

Great win by the Major Pennant Side

Last Sunday Oatlands took on an in-form Stonecutters Ridge at home. It was a great morning for golf with the course being presented in fantastic condition. It was, as with all previous matches, a very close game & was a must win game for the boys. And I am happy to say we came away with a great win. The boys won 4.5 to 2.5.

Again Nick Murdoch, the captain, who is in great form came away with a win along with Joe EL-Badawi who is becoming a hard man to beat. Luke Mason gave his opponent no chance with a strong 7&5 win. Tim Frazer played some great golf at #1 and beat a strong opponent winning on the 17th.

Special mention to young Will Reece who at only 15 yrs. played a great game at reserve & came away with a win. A definite star of the future.

The course was given its highest compliment on the morning by the Stonecutters team saying it was in great condition & we have some of the best greens they have played on. So well done to the green staff with all their hard work in getting Oatlands looking so good. A lovely lunch was put on by the kitchen & again there was many compliments by all attending.

This week we take on Cabramatta away & it is a must win game. It will be a tough match but the Oatlands boys are hitting some good golf and will give it their all.
