Oatlands Enews – Friday 25th January 2019

It is with pleasure that I confirm that a new General Manager for Oatlands Golf Club has been appointed. We welcome Sam Howe on board.  His first day will be 11 February, 2019 where he will work beside Barnaby for a week before he takes over on Barnaby’s departure on 15 February. Sam comes from Elanora Golf and Country Club where he has worked for the last four and a half years finishing up as the Assistant General Manager and having managerial oversight for most of the Golf Club Operations, including Food and Beverage, Events and Golf Course.  Like Barnaby, Sam is very member focused and will make a very good leader to our team.  Sam is also a member of the PGA. Sam will be playing golf some Saturdays before he starts, so if you see him, please welcome him to the Club.

11th Fairway Drainage Update

We are delighted to advise that the 11th hole will reopen on Saturday, 26th January.  Please be aware of directional signage to assist the new turf to take hold.

Mixed Pennants

While we have been enjoying our holidays the representative season kicked off with the Mixed Pennant interclub competition.  After a narrow loss at home in the first game, the team produced two strong wins to be well placed after 3 rounds.

Debbie Jepson is doing a great job as Team Manager and I hope to see some more positive results coming along in the coming weeks.

Rules Corner

Members need to be aware that with the New Rules of Golf are now in effect, the local rules have been updated to comply. A new score card is now being used with revised local rules.  We ask that you please ensure that you familiarise yourself with the local rules as printed on the back of the score card.  To assist members understanding of the local rules, an expanded explanation of the Local Rules has been placed on the web site.  The document can be viewed here:  https://www.oatlandsgolf.com.au/cms/?p=680

CORRECTING A MISUNDERSTANDING ABOUT THE 2019 RULES OF GOLF – Our club is one of many that has NOT adopted the 2019 Model Local Rule that provides an alternative to Stroke and Distance for a Lost Ball or Ball Out of Bounds.

So, as has been the case in prior years, if your ball is lost or out of bounds, you MUST proceed under penalty of Stroke and Distance, applying Rule 18.2.

If your ball may be lost outside a penalty area or may be out of bounds, we encourage you in the strongest possible terms to announce and play a Provisional Ball before moving forward to search.

We take this further opportunity to remind all members that the available search time is now three (3) minutes from when the player commences searching for their ball. We encourage EVERY group member to be timing themselves and each other to ensure this rule applies fairly to every golfer in the competition as well as assist us all to get used to this new arrangement.

I refer all members to the following web site which provides a detailed summary of the important new rules.  These have been explained in recent editions of the eNews.   https://www.golf.org.au/site/_content/document/00043354-source.pdf

On The Course

Rainfall for working week 2.0mm;           Rainfall year to date 52.0mm;                 Dam 75%        Green Speed 9 feet

It’s been a massive week for the team on the course this week, with all bunkers being trimmed and all fairways, fairway surrounds and intermediate roughs being sprayed with growth regulator. This will enable the team to have some control over the growth on these playing surfaces in the coming weeks.

Greens continue to remain healthy with a fungicide for brown patch disease plus a soil health product containing beneficial bacteria’s being applied this morning. Growth regulator and a calcium based fertiliser will be applied to greens tomorrow morning. The calcium will help the greens cope with the warm weather predicted for this weekend.

Growth on all areas of the course remains strong with the mowers working overtime to keep it under control.

The long awaited return of the 11th hole will be on Saturday, with a cut of the new turf planned for tomorrow.

Martyna received some good news late last week, being accepted into the Future Turf Managers program being run down in Melbourne in partnership by the Australian Golf Course Superintendents Association and Jacobsen turf equipment – Congratulations Martyna !!

The Course Team

Volunteers

A small crew of volunteers were on course Monday, assisting with the trimming of bunkers. During January the volunteers have been out helping with the laying of turf on the 10th and 11th works and also on mowers and blowers where they were needed outside of normal volunteer days. Thank you for all your assistance as always gentlemen.

“5 AFTER FIVE”

Huge congratulations to the lovely Margaret Race and the lovable Rodney Walsh on winning the 2018 Five after 5. Some super golf from both individuals and whilst Margaret’s win was popular and well received there were some questions on whether or not the host can win his own event? As Rod notes “If Tiger Woods can win his own event then so can I!”. Well each of them gets to spend $250 in the Club Professional Shop as reward for their efforts. For those who missed this event then you need to get down to OGC and give it a go. The menu was simply outstanding with a wide selection of award winning cuisine, a beverage of your choice and all for $30

Chicken Run @ OGC

The good old fashioned chicken run is back on at Oatlands and we hope you can make it on Friday, 1st or 15th February for 7 holes of golf followed by a fantastic buffet dinner. The event will be hosted by Rod Walsh who is looking forward to handing out some frozen chickens at the end of the day. The cost of the event is $30pp and includes entry into the “Chicken Run” along with your meal and a drink voucher. We will be giving out prizes for the best Male and Female golfers and  perhaps a few prizes for those who need a little encouragement. Play will be in 6’s so grab your friends and have some fun. General

Welcome to 2019!

I trust one and all enjoyed a fantastic festive feast and had the opportunity to pop in to the Club for a game of golf or two over the festive period. The action never stops here at your Club and we have recently contested the Summer Medal and AM Stanton Cup and our next big event takes place on Saturday, 9th February, being the AC Berk Cup. Our recent membership activity has resulted in a number of new members joining our Club these past few months and to each and every one of you I say again a huge welcome and I trust you are enjoying your Oatlands experience. Our recruitment and retention of members remains your Club’s No.1 priority and at this time I would again ask all members to see if they can assist in the following ways:

  • Refer a friend or family member to our Club. We have fantastic programmes for new golfers, the “Get Started” programme is just about to kick off and the very successful Junior Development Programme continues to develop the skills of children aged between 5-17
  • Recommend an event to our Club. Your Club was again voted best golf club kitchen in NSW and the feedback that we continue to receive is just how well we host events. Please ask your family and friends to consider hosting their next golf day, work or private function here at OGC. Hannah Bowcock will be sending out information to all members about the new menus packages that we are offering.
  • Attend an event. Have you attended an event recently? Our Melbourne Cup function was a huge hit, our Friday night “Five after 5” provided a cheap and cheerful reason to come to the Club and our Bistro on Bettington restaurant nights offer one of the best meals in the area. We have plenty of opportunities for you to come along, so please jump on the website now to reserve your place at an event

Wishing all members a very Happy New Year and I look forward to seeing you at the Club!

George Isaac – Club President
