Oatlands Enews – Friday 1st February 2019

On the course, the team have done an excellent job this week maintaining our course through some very tough, hot conditions.  Cutting grass has been the main agenda with a public holiday on Monday resulting in some lost time.  Last week, growth regulator was applied to all fairways with an overspray into the rough.  The effect of the growth regulator is already apparent; the rough between the fairway and tree lines will thicken up.  This did not seem to impact play on Wednesday however, with 45 points winning the singles.

The health of our greens is our priority during these conditions.  As I write, it is nice to be experiencing a drop in temperatures and some rain; however temperatures for most days this past week have exceeded 30 degrees, and night time minimums have not fallen below 20 degrees.  These conditions are a “perfect storm” for the development of Brown Patch and Pythium.  Preventative fungicide treatments have been applied to all greens for these diseases and thankfully our greens remain healthy at this time.

Members should be aware that green speeds will reduce during these extremely hot conditions.  This is usual for this time of year.

Mixed Pennants

The team is back in action this Sunday, playing against Massey Park at Massey Park.  Best wishes for an away win!

Major Pennants

The Sydney Metropolitan Major Pennant begins on Sunday 10th February.  We will be playing Monash Golf Club at Monash.  The boys would greatly appreciate the support of any members able to offer their time to caddy.  Please contact the office to register your availability.

Volunteers

Time gets away from us, but we are only about six (6) weeks away from autumn course renovations (March 18th & 19th).  Our process is refined, but we kindly ask any member who may have a spare few hours to assist with this process. If you have the time, please reach out to the Club through the main office or via email admin@oatlandsgolf.com.au to register your availability.

Lost Property

A reminder to all members that any lost property is to be returned to either the Professional Shop, Bar or Administration Office. Please ensure that lost items are reunited with their owners. Thank you!

On The Course

Rainfall for the week: 5.5mm          Rainfall for 2019: 57.5mm                 Dam: 65%        Green Speed 9 feet

  • It has mainly been grass cutting on the agenda this week with Monday’s public holiday robbing us of time to perform other activities.
  • On Tuesday, 2 staff members were needed to tidy up debris blown down over the weekend, taking them the best part of the day to complete. More fallen branches were also tidied up on Tuesday morning – this has been a trend in recent weeks.
  • Greens health remains good even during these unfavourable conditions at present. Staff members continue to check moisture levels in greens each morning to ensure that moisture levels are above 25%. We find that this level works best for our situation and the greens get through the day without any stress until the next watering at night.
  • A cool change is predicted for Thursday night, giving the greens and staff some respite.
  • Some activity on the course next week will see Gordon and Dom go in the 13th pond to manually remove the duckweed.  They will be spreading the mulch piles on the 11th hole, and the fairway bunker on the 11th has been cleaned and trimmed, with some extra sand to be placed in this bunker next week.
  • Contract arborists will be on course Tuesday to finish cleaning up after the storm that went through before Christmas. Fence contractors have also been given the green light to perform repairs near the 6th

Volunteers

No Volunteers this week due to public holiday but they have inspected the atrium for repairs for next Monday.
