DEVELOPMENT UPDATE

Following this week’s closure of the 12th hole and the successful introduction of the Spare Hole, the Club wishes to advise members of further temporary course adjustments as part of the early works phase of the development.

During next week, the 18th hole will be taken out of play to facilitate utility trenching and construction of the temporary car park. In its place, the newly completed 19th hole will be brought into play and become Hole 7, to be played immediately after the current 6th hole.

The transition to this revised layout is expected to be seamless, and we thank members for their adaptability. Member feedback on the new 13th (Spare) Hole has been overwhelmingly positive, and we acknowledge the outstanding efforts of our course team in preparing both new holes to an exceptional standard.

To assist with navigation, an updated course map is available above and includes clear directions for pedestrian and cart users to the new 13th tee. For safety and turf preservation, members are asked to park their carts or buggies short of the tee and walk onto the teeing ground. After playing the Par 3, players may drive beside the 13th tee and use the access road to complete a loop or three-point turn in order to play the Par 5.

We appreciate your continued support and patience throughout this phase of early works and will continue to keep you informed via the eNews, Club website, and Pro Shop.

COURSE CARE & PACE OF PLAY

As we progress through the winter months, the Club wishes to remind all members of the importance of taking greater responsibility for the presentation and condition of the golf course.

Unfortunately, there has been a noticeable decline in course etiquette—particularly in the consistent filling of divots with sand, the repair of pitch marks (ideally yours and one other), and the proper raking of bunkers after use. This level of neglect not only detracts from the playing experience for fellow members but places unnecessary strain on our ground staff who work tirelessly to maintain the course.

Every member has a role to play in preserving course quality. If your ball lands in a bunker, you are expected to leave it in a condition you would be happy to find it in. If you create a pitch mark on a green, you are expected to repair it fully. These are the responsibility of all club members.

In addition to course care, we have also observed that the pace of play on competition days has been slipping. While golf is to be enjoyed, it should not be at the expense of those playing behind you. Over the coming weeks, we will include a segment on “Pace of Play”—highlighting the negative impacts of slow play, the collective responsibility to keep pace with the group in front, and simple strategies to adopt “ready golf” practices.

We ask for your cooperation and commitment to improving these areas. Course care and pace of play are integral to the enjoyment of the game, for you, your playing partners and every member of Oatlands Golf Club.

NEW MEMBER MEET & GREET

Last Friday’s New Member Meet and Greet was a great success, with over 80 new members, their proposers, and Club representatives in attendance. The evening offered a relaxed and social opportunity for members to connect, ask questions, and learn more about the Oatlands Golf Club community. While most attendees had already completed their formal induction, the event served as a warm and informative welcome to Club life.

Club President Col McRae and Director Stephanie Monaghan spoke about the Club’s history, the upcoming Clubhouse redevelopment, and the Club's commitment to growing and diversifying the female membership. They also highlighted the support available through our PGA staff to help new members feel confident and engaged. The event was well received, with many attendees expressing their appreciation for the Club’s welcoming approach and strong sense of community.

FROM THE COURSE

Monday was a big day on the course, with the course team and volunteers working together on the major turfing project on the 17th flyover. Turf was stripped from the 12th fairway and relocated to the 17th flyover, significantly improving the playing surface in that area. This upgrade will also ensure a much smoother ride for those using carts on this hole. The improved area of the 17th flyover is approximately 1,000m², but the project involved handling around 2,000m² of turf in total — as it had to be carefully cut and manually lifted from the 12th fairway before being transported and laid at the 17th. The volunteers involved with this work certainly earnt their lunch, and I’m sure they slept very well Monday night!

Two separate applications were made to greens this week, with the first application focusing on nutrition to ensure the plant can maintain growth and deal with seasonal stresses. The second application was part of an ongoing program to improve the soil condition of the greens, which in turn will result in improved infiltration rates and improved root development naturally.

Greens are being solid needle tined this week, both before and after competition play. A total of 14 greens have been completed, with each green rolled immediately following the verti-draining process. This helps to smooth the surface, leaving minimal disruption to play while still delivering important agronomic benefits. Solid tining is essential for relieving compaction within the soil profile, especially after the recent rainfall and the frequent mowing and rolling required to maintain the required playing standards. These practices, while necessary for surface performance, can compact the root zone over time — reducing turf health and drainage efficiency if not addressed. This ongoing maintenance ensures the greens remain healthy, firm, and responsive throughout the season.

The volunteers were on course Monday morning performing a bunker run in front of the competition players, assisting with the turfing work on the 17th flyover, and the painting within the temporary Clubhouse. A big thank you to everyone that pitched in to help out this week, with the physical work of lifting the turf hopefully adding a few extra meters to your drives!

Greens will be cut on both mornings this weekend. I will be setting pins on both mornings.

Happy Golfing
The Course Team.

DOUG SPURWAY MEMORIAL TROPHY

The Doug Spurway Memorial Trophy was played on Saturday 05/07. A big congratulations to our winner Jason Bae who went out in the morning field and fired a round of 43 points off of a handicap of 13.

Well done Jason.

The Doug Spurway Memorial Trophy is an event played in memory of Doug Spurway who was a Greenkeeper at Oatlands from January 1946 and was the Course Superintendent from 1969 through to 1989 The Trophy was introduced in 1990 with David Murray being the first winner.

Father & Son Cup/Parent & Child Trophy

The annual Father & Son and Parent & Child Trophies were played on Sunday 6th July. The winners of the Father & Son Cup were Wil Reece & Phil Reece with a score of 45 points and the winners of the Parent & Child Trophy were Anne Marie Wahbe and Daniel Wahbe with a score of 45 points.

Congratulations to the winners and thank you to all the families who took part in the event.

W E Tunks Father & Son Trophy donated by Bill “Farmer” Tunks who joined in 1939 and became an institution at Oatlands. Apart from his many exploits it shouldn’t be forgotten that Bill was a mean golfer too, winning the Club Championship in 1953. When Bill junior won the first of his three championships in 1962, they became the only Father Son champions. Only appropriate that they should be the first winners of this trophy in 1979.
