SAM REECE TOP 10 AT QLD CHAMPIONSHIPS

Oatlands Golf Club would like to extend its congratulations to Associate Professional Sam Reece (pictured left), who recorded a top 10 finish at this week’s Queensland Associate Championships held at Windaroo Lakes Golf Club.

Sam posted consistent rounds of 74, 73, 73 and 75 around the par 73 layout (+3), finishing Tied 9th, just 11 shots behind eventual winner Damon Stephenson from Gainsborough Golf Club.

This is a fantastic result for Sam as he continues his training and education to become a fully qualified PGA Professional. We’re proud to have such a dedicated and talented young professional representing Oatlands and encourage members to pass on their congratulations next time they see him around the Club. The final standings for the event can be found here.

PENNANT UPDATE

Master Pennants

Congratulations to the Club's Masters Pennant side, who returned to the winner’s circle over the weekend with a dominant 5–3 victory over Manly Golf Club on their home course.

The team now sits second in their section behind Bankstown Golf Club, whom they face this Sunday at home. This match presents an ideal opportunity for redemption following Bankstown’s handy win just a few weeks ago, and the result is expected to play a pivotal role in determining who advances to the knockout stages.

We extend our best wishes to the team for this crucial fixture and hope that their skill and course knowledge will carry them to victory over their Bankstown rivals.

Members can follow the team’s progress by clicking on the following link.

Interclub Challenge

Commiserations to the Club's Interclub Pennant side, whose season came to an end on Sunday after a hard-fought 6.5 to 1.5 loss to a strong NSW GC team at Killara Golf Club.

In a rain-interrupted season, the team showed great resilience—recording a win and two halved matches to qualify for the sectional final—only to be narrowly edged out by the team from La Perouse.

Although there is disappointment in not progressing to the knockout stage, every team member should hold their head high for representing the Club with pride and distinction throughout the campaign.

Members can view the final standings here.

Women's Bronze III Pennant

Best of luck to our Ladies Bronze III Pennant team as they commence their season today at Bayview Golf Club. The team representing the Club comprises Joy Hawksley, Kim Lim, Soreen Ferm, Viv Beck, Barbara Beasley (Field Captain), and Carla Geddes.

We wish the team every success for the season ahead and will keep members updated on their progress and results as the competition unfolds.

Men's Foursomes Championship

This prestigious event honors two stalwarts of the Club, Don Foreman, after whom the Gross event is named, and Dick Peet, the namesake of the Nett event. Both Don and Dick held key leadership roles and made lasting contributions to Oatlands over many years. Their legacies live on through these much-loved championships.

Congratulations to Will Reece and Charlie Kim, who were crowned the 2025 Men's Foursomes Champions after two outstanding rounds of 74 and 69 (+3). The pair finished two shots ahead of runners-up Christian Fong and Earl Rees (+5), who themselves recorded a remarkable 3-under-par 67 in the morning round.

Christian and Earl can take pride in claiming the Nett title with a 36-hole total of 140 (Even Par), emerging on top among the 68 pairs who took part in the event.

Those could not commit themselves to the whole day but still wanted to enjoy the fun of foursomes golf headed out with their playing partners for the 18 hole foursomes event. The winners of the 18 hole event were Jim Granger & Pablo Hrdina with a Nett score of 67.

Oatlands Cup & Long Marker Knockout Qualifying

The Oatlands Cup presented to the Club by Mrs. B.E. Parker in 1932 is an 18-hole handicap match play competition, where the top eight qualifiers compete over three weeks to be crowned the 2025 Oatlands Cup Winner.

The Long Marker's Knockout is a similar 18-hole match play competition, open to qualifiers off a 35 - 54 handicap, with the trophy donated in 1971 by Mrs. G.A. Tait. "Mrs. Tait was a former army officer and ran very tight ship as captain. She was a real character with a wonderful sense of humor".

Congratulations to the following ladies who successfully qualified yesterday for the Ladies Oatlands Cup & Long Marker Trophies.

FROM THE COURSE

The course is starting to dry out nicely with the rainfall on Wednesday morning not having that great an impact, as the high winds that followed helped counteract the rainfall. Ropes protecting wet areas on fairways are being reduced as these areas are dry enough for cart traffic to resume through them, and the mowers have been able to cut all fairways and green surrounds this week.

With growth starting to slow down, the team has spent some time this week completing the turfing around the edges of the 19th tee and pathway. The tee pads have been mown at fairway height which has removed most of the leaf from the couch which is why these pads look brown in colour. A liquid fertiliser and green pigment will be applied to these tee pads which will encourage the turf to tip back up (shoot new green leaf) and regain their green colour appearance. A concrete bowl is going to be installed early next week at the end of the small path that leads down to the 19th green from the 7th tee. This is the last task that requires the use of the track through the trees between the 7th and 8th fairways, and once completed the course team will start preparing these track marks for turfing.

Winter Grass weeds in tee surrounds have been sprayed this week with a selective herbicide which controls these weeds and will also burn any kikuyu weeds in these couch complexes. Whilst not harmful to the couch, they may lose some colour for a week or two until the herbicide leaves the plant. We should start to see the Winter Grass weeds start to die off in the next weeks.

A new aerator has been installed in the 13th pond this week and matches the aerator in the 9th pond.

The volunteers were on course Monday morning raking bunkers in front of the competition players, trimming fairway sprinkler heads, repairing the practice nets, pressure washing pathways, poisoning Crab Grass in tee complexes, whipper snipping under the guard rail along Bettington Rd and rose trimming. Thank you, gentlemen, for all your help this week, your assistance with these tasks gives the course team a great head start on the regular maintenance tasks each week.

Greens will be cut on Saturday then cut and rolled on Sunday morning. Garry will be setting pins on Saturday, and I will be setting them on Sunday.

Happy Golfing
The Course Team.
