HOW PACE OF PLAY IS MANAGED

Following last week's explanation on what constitutes slow play, it’s helpful to know how it’s managed on course, and what steps the Club may take to address issues as they arise.

Who Administers the Pace of Play Policy?

Any one of the Club’s appointed marshals, starters, Board members, or the General Manager may act as a Pace of Play Official. Multiple officials may be active on any given competition day, across both men’s, women’s, and mixed events.

On-Course Interventions

When a group falls behind or is out of position, the Pace of Play Official will:

  • Alert the group to the delay and offer guidance or encouragement to help them catch up.
  • If the delay persists, the group may be instructed to:
    • Stand aside and allow the group behind to play through, and/or
    • Pick up their balls and move forward to the correct position.

These interventions ensure that one slow group does not negatively impact the entire field.

Post-Round Follow-Up

If a group finishes the round out of position, they will be contacted by a Pace of Play or Match Committee Official to discuss the delay. Repeat offences may be referred to the Match Committee for further discussion. The aim is always education first, penalty only when required.

SAM REECE WINS AT HOME

Congratulations to Oatlands’ own PGA Associate professional Sam Reece, who claimed an impressive victory in this week’s Australian PGA Associates Match, held here at the Club. Teeing off in the final group and with the pressure of a home course advantage, Sam rose to the occasion with a superb five-under-par round, securing the win by one shot.

With fellow Oatlands GC member and Pro Shop team member Christian Fong on the bag as caddie, Sam sealed the victory with a clutch par putt on the final hole, cheered on by a gallery of spectators. The win is a well-deserved reward for Sam’s hard work and dedication. He’s pictured here with his proud support team: Brad Doherty, brother Wil Reece, Christian Fong, Mum and Dad (Sherri & Phil), and mentor/boss Jeremy Ward.

DEVELOPMENT UPDATE

Members will have noticed that work has commenced on the 12th hole this week, with early works contractors beginning to grade the fairway and green area in preparation for the temporary car park. The contractor is conscious of members' attachment to the 18th hole and has indicated that its closure will only occur once work is ready to begin in that area. While a confirmed date for this closure is yet to be advised, the Club expects to receive notice in advance and will promptly communicate any updates. In the meantime, the green waste previously stored near the 15th hole has been mulched and will be gradually distributed around the course to clear an area to store this fill.

In other updates, the Pro Shop has now returned to the temporary Clubhouse building—the site of the former Shop. This move places the team in closer proximity to the 1st tee, practice facilities, and teaching/fitting studios, and coincides with the painting and carpeting of the room's interior. To help maintain the condition of the facility, members are kindly asked not to bring golf bags or buggies into the building when accessing the teaching studios or storing equipment. A special thank you goes to the Club’s volunteers who helped make the transition smooth and efficient.

FROM THE COURSE

It’s been a productive week for the team, with plenty of work being completed across the course. The recent run of calm, windless days has eased the pressure on leaf clean-up, reducing the need for two staff on blowers each day to clear debris from fairway surfaces.

Work has begun on the temporary putting green on the 18th tee. The couch turf was cut out, with a small section of the championship tee pad repaired with some of this turf. Our excavator was then used to dig out the remaining root zone of the couch turf which will hopefully reduce the likelihood of the couch grass regenerating through the new putting surface. Heading into the weekend, we have almost installed the new growing medium back into the green sub-base, with this to be completed early next week before we incorporate an organic matter material into this profile which will assist with moisture and nutrient retention/availability. We are storing the turf we removed from the 12th green outside the maintenance shed and plan to relay this turf by the end of next week.

The contractors have commenced work on the 12th hole this week, starting at the green and removing the existing topsoil. This provided a great snapshot of this green’s soil profile, and it will make a great comparison to the putting green profile when the easement works commence in this area. The old 12th green had around 100mm of a sandy profile (from renovation practices over many years), and then it turned into a heavy soil type that was black in colour, with no sub-surface drainage at all. It explains the challenge in maintaining the green during summer and why this green couldn’t develop a strong root system, with the surface prone to lifting when we verti-drained during renovations.

Members of the course team spent Monday and Tuesday moving sand around in bunkers, pushing it in from the back and pulling it down off the high faces, to ensure the lining materials are properly covered. Extra sand was added to selected bunkers on the 2nd, 4th, and 5th holes. The adding of sand will continue of the next few months to top up bunkers as required.

Tee complexes were treated with a herbicide to control the winter grass weeds in them, and areas on the 7th fairway have been cut out with the turf cutter and rotary hoed to relieve compaction. Turf will be cut from either the 12th or 18th fairway to repair these areas. The other areas around the course that were completed recently are establishing well, with the 17th flyover a major improvement.

The volunteers were on course Monday morning mulching the gardens around Farmer Tunk’s Hut and refreshing the mulch area between the 8th fairway and 9th tee. Many of these Monday volunteers backed up on Thursday morning to help relocate the Proshop back down to the temporary clubhouse building. Thank you to everyone that generously volunteered at the club this week, your contribution and continued support is very much appreciated.

Greens will be cut both mornings this weekend. I will be setting pins on Saturday and Gary will set them on Sunday morning.

Happy Golfing
The Course Team.

FAREWELL TO CLUBHOUSE

With early works already underway and the major clubhouse redevelopment soon to begin, now is the perfect time to celebrate the many memories and milestones shared within the current Clubhouse over the years. To mark the occasion, the Club will be hosting a ‘Farewell to the Clubhouse’ function on Saturday, 16th August—the final members’ Saturday night event in the current building.

The evening will feature a relaxed and social atmosphere, with canapés, platters, a drink on arrival, and live music playing favourites from the 70s, 80s, and 90s. While a few brief speeches are planned, the focus of the night will be on members coming together to reflect, connect, and farewell the Clubhouse that has been a cherished part of their golfing lives. Further details will be shared soon, and we encourage members to secure their spot via the booking link below.

MEN’S SUPER SENIOR PENNANT

Following a first-round bye, our Super Seniors Pennant team played their opening match of the season at Muirfield Golf Club against a strong Bankstown side—one of five new teams joining Division 2 this year. The course was in good winter condition with particularly quick greens, and while the team fought hard, Bankstown’s team depth and low handicaps saw them prevail 7.5 to 0.5. Despite the score line, many matches were closely contested, with Lindsay MacInnes taking his match to the 18th hole and John Farrar securing a hard-earned half point.

New Super Seniors Mark Clout, Phil Langdon, and John Muggleton all showed promise in their debut appearances and are expected to make strong contributions as the season progresses. The team now looks ahead to their next match against Stonecutters Golf Club at Bankstown on Monday 28th August.

WOMEN’S BRONZE III PENNANT

Commiserations to the Club’s Ladies Bronze III Pennant side who concluded their season with a narrow 3–2 loss to Wakehurst on Friday at Mona Vale Golf Club. The team finished in 6th position overall, though the final ladder standing could have been markedly different—three of their six matches were decided by just a single game, highlighting how closely contested the season was.

We extend our sincere thanks to the ladies who represented the Club throughout the season. The experience gained will no doubt serve them well in future representative competitions. Final results can be found below:

WS TARGETT MATCH PLAY

Congratulations to the following members who were successful in their WS Targett Quarter Final matches last weekend, securing their place in this weekend’s Semi Finals. We wish all our semi-finalists the best of luck as they vie for a spot in the final.

WS Targett Match Play Draw

The WS Targett Trophy carries great significance at the Club, having been donated by Bill Targett, who joined Oatlands in 1956 and was elected to Committee that same year. Bill served as Captain from 1960–1962 and President from 1967–1969, and was honoured with Life Membership in 1979. The trophy has been contested annually since 1981, with the inaugural title claimed by Col Barr and Jean Baker.

LEGACY DAY - SAT 26th JULY

The annual Legacy Cup will be held on Saturday 26th July, an 18-hole black tee individual stableford competition, open to players with a handicap of 36 or less. The competition fee is $25 per player, which includes an $8 donation to Legacy, an organization that provides support to the families of deceased and incapacitated ADF veterans. Legacy’s ongoing work ensures that the families of those who served our country receive care and financial assistance when they need it most.

The player with the best nett score on the day will have the honour of representing Oatlands Golf Club at the State Legacy Cup (event details to be announced). In addition to this opportunity, prizes will be awarded to the winners of four handicap grades, the overall scratch winner, and nearest the pin (NTP) winners.

This is a fantastic opportunity for members to compete in a spirited event while also contributing to a meaningful cause. We look forward to a great day of golf on 26th July, and to showing our collective support for the remarkable work Legacy continues to do for our veteran community.

GOLF CONNECT UPDATE
