CLUB CHAMPIONSHIPS

The 2025 Club Championship Finals Day delivered all the excitement and high quality golf members could have hoped for.

Despite a cloudy and uncertain start, conditions improved as the day went on, allowing players and spectators to enjoy the course in superb condition — a credit to Course Superintendent Dom Yates and his team for their exceptional work.

In the headline A Grade 36-hole final, Wil Reece took control early, building a six-hole lead over Corey Hardy after the morning round. Corey fought back in the afternoon with three birdies in the opening four holes, but Wil held steady, matching Corey’s birdie on the 14th to seal a 5 & 3 victory.

Other winners on the day included Max Hardy in A Reserve (3 & 1), Curtis McNamara in Middle Markers (5 & 3), and Brendan Oakes, who edged out Andrew Tohme in a thrilling 1 up win in the Long Markers trophy.

Adding to the occasion, Ladies Club Champion Jia You was present to watch the closing stages of the men’s final and was formally presented with her Ladies Championship Trophy (pictured below).

A strong crowd enjoyed an excellent day of competition and camaraderie. The Club extends its thanks to Matthew Seamons, John Bowring, Bill Mitchell, Campbell Robertson, and John Carey for their assistance as rules officials, and to all members who came out to watch — a fitting celebration of Oatlands’ 2025 Champions.

2026 NSW AMATEUR

The Club is delighted to announce that Oatlands Golf Club has been confirmed as the host venue for the prestigious 2026 NSW Amateur Championship, alongside Strathfield Golf Club. Run from January 27–31, Oatlands will host half the field during the two stroke play qualifying rounds, and the top 32 men and 16 women for the matchplay section of the competition. The NSW Amateur Championship is one of Australia’s most historic and respected amateur titles, attracting the best male and female golfers from across Australia and around the globe. The champions will also earn automatic entry into the NSW Open. DEVELOPMENT UPDATE

Members will notice some changes around the Club this week, with the temporary fencing around the putting green soon to be removed. The area will be re-turfed with couch grass in the coming weeks, which will allow our course team to more effectively maintain the remainder of the putting green. Trenching works around the clubhouse is now largely complete, with only some areas requiring refilling using fill from existing stockpiles. A solution will soon be implemented to address the drainage issue that caused the walkway to the 13th to become waterlogged, with finalization expected once the swales around the temporary car park are completed next week. The temporary car park remains on track for completion towards the end of the month, which will significantly improve the member and guest experience upon arriving at the Club. Inside the old clubhouse, contractors continue with “soft” demolition works, including the removal of internal walls and roof cavity materials. The old clubhouse gardens, including the large pine tree, were removed this week, whilst the more significant demolition, including removal of the roof and walls, is expected to commence later this month.

MEN'S & WOMEN'S OATLANDS CUP & SALVER

Members are encouraged to register their participation for two of the Club’s most prestigious upcoming events — the Men’s Oatlands Cup on Saturday, 15th November, and the Ladies Oatlands Anniversary Cup & Salver on Monday, 17th November. Timesheets for both events are now open, and we’d love to see some home-grown talent take out these historic competitions.

Men's Oatlands Cup - Saturday 15th November

Women's Anniversary Cup & Salver - Monday 17th November

The Men’s Oatlands Cup, first played on 8th August 1959 to commemorate the acquisition of the course, has a proud tradition of excellence. Past winners include notable names such as Jack Newton (1967), Steve Elkington (1982), and David Ecob (1985) — all of whom went on to successful professional careers.

The Ladies Anniversary Cup & Salver is an 18-hole Stroke event played from the Red tees and forms part of the Golf NSW Jean Derrin Series, open to women with handicaps (+ to 18 – Cup) and (18 to 30 – Salver).

TURTLE SIGHTINGS

Members may soon start to notice some of our local native turtles wandering across the fairways in the coming weeks. With the increase in humidity and summer rainfall, turtles are on the move as their nesting season begins. Members are asked not to touch or move the turtles, but instead to take a photo and notify the Pro Shop team. These sightings assist the Club and researchers in monitoring turtle activity around the course and will be shared with Professor Ricky Spencer from Western Sydney University, who will visit the site to collect and incubate eggs as part of the 4 Million Turtles program.

14th HOLE DAM UPDATE

Members may recall being advised last week of an unpleasant odor in the pond on the 14th hole, believed to be the result of possible illegal dumping into the drains that service this waterway. The Club did not immediately undertake remediation until representatives from Parramatta Council were able to inspect the site this week. Unfortunately, without clear evidence of illegal dumping, the responsibility for rectification rests with the landowner — in this case, Oatlands Golf Club. It has been recommended that the Club continue to run the pond fountain to oxygenate the water, remove as much of the surface scum as possible, and undertake water quality testing to help prevent a recurrence of this issue in the future.

FIRST AID & CPR TRAINING

This week, several of our Club and course staff undertook First Aid and CPR training to ensure they are better equipped to respond in the event of an emergency on-site.

A few key takeaways from this training that members should be aware of include:

  •  The Club’s defibrillator is located in the bar. In the event of a cardiac arrest, it should be applied as soon as possible.
  • First aid kits are available in the Pro Shop and at the Greenkeepers’ shed.
  •  If you come across someone needing assistance on the course: Notify Club staff immediately so trained personnel can respond. Call 000 — the operator will need to speak with someone on-site to triage the patient and allocate an ambulance response based on the severity of the injury.
  •  If you are feeling unwell or sick, please think twice about venturing out onto the course. Response times to an unconscious or injured person on a rural property which includes golf courses are inevitably slower than at a physical address.
These simple measures can make a critical difference in an emergency and could even be the difference between life and death. We encourage all members to familiarize themselves with these procedures to ensure everyone’s safety.

CLUBHOUSE F&B POLICY

Oatlands Golf Club has introduced a new Food and Beverage Policy to ensure compliance with NSW food safety and liquor laws and support the sustainability of our hospitality services.

Under this policy, members, guests, and visitors are not permitted to bring or consume their own food or drinks inside the Clubhouse or on the outdoor chairs and terrace area in front of the Clubhouse.

Members may bring their own food for personal consumption on the golf course only. Members with any questions are encouraged to contact the General Manager at gm@oatlandsgolf.com.au or (02) 9630 4444.

The details of the new policy can be found on the Club website here, or on the Club's notice board.

FROM THE COURSE

Rainfall for the week 18.5 mm

Rainfall for 2025 1090.0 mm

The course team have started solid needle tining greens this week with this work being performed before play to avoid disruption to club competitions. Performing the task this way does make it a longer process, so there will still be 2 or 3 greens to complete early next week. The needle tining has minimal impact on the actual putting surface once the green is rolled, but these small aeration holes/tunnels left behind following the needle tining improve moisture movement through the soil profile and allows air movement into the root zone for a healthier turf surface.

Greens were dusted again this week on Tuesday morning. The dusting of the greens will be performed on alternative Mondays and Tuesdays to reduce the impact to Monday players. The new Dakota topdressing unit has an electric control screen with pre-set calibration settings for the amount of sand we want to apply, and these can be interchanged simply by the touch of a button making this task quicker and more accurate.

The rainfall last week was very welcome and didn’t impact the Saturday Championship matches too much. The humid weather that has followed has certainly increased growth of the kikuyu on our fairways and roughs, with growth regulator applications continuing this week with the 4th, 6th and 13th holes completed, and the 8th and 9th holes started.

A health Inspector from Parramatta Council visited the course this week to inspect the 14th pond, and it has been deemed by him to be a one off pollution event, with the club responsible for the clean-up despite coming from an outside source. We are awaiting a letter from council which will outline the clubs requirements regarding the clean-up and testing of the water. Course staff removed the dead eels this week and disposed of them, and the aerator has been turned back on to try and replenish the oxygen levels in the water.

Our volunteers were on course this week performing a bunker run ahead of the competition players on Monday morning before assisting with the processing of the green waste along the side of the 16th hole. Other tasks completed included the trimming of the 6th tee hedge, repairs to the awning over the food truck, divotting of fairways on Thursday morning, and tee distance plate rejuvenation work. Thank you, gentleman, for your support once again this week. The banter amongst this group on a Monday morning is always great, as we tell each other about the successes we’ve had on the course in the past week such as holing a bunker shot on the 18th for a birdie which resulted in a shovel!

Greens will be cut both mornings this weekend. Joel will be setting pins on Saturday with Gary setting them on Sunday.

Happy Golfing

The Course Team.

ENCOURAGE SHIELD

The Club's Encourage Shield sides played again over the weekend, maintaining their unbeaten run.

The Oatlands (Blue) side tied Castle Hill 3 games apiece. This result means they enter the final game of the season in second place, needing a win at home against Killara (and a Ryde Parramatta loss) this weekend to have a chance of progressing to the knockout stage.

The Oatlands (White) side recorded a 4-2 victory over Avondale and will face Castle Hill this weekend at St Michael’s, with the winner advancing to the knockout stage.
