PACE OF PLAY - PART 1

Slow play continues to be a major factor impacting enjoyment of the game, particularly during busy competition times. But what exactly constitutes slow play, and how can it be avoided?

What is Slow Play?
Slow play is defined by the Club as a group falling 15 minutes or more behind the group in front. This reflects the standard 7 or 8 minute starting time interval plus a 7 minute grace period. It's important to note that slow play is not based on the group behind, but rather a loss of position relative to the group ahead.

Whose Responsibility Is It?
Every player in the group is responsible for maintaining pace. It’s not just the job of the lowest marker or the most experienced player. Your group should always aim to remain in position with the group in front and strive to complete your round in as close as possible to 4 hours.

Why It Matters
Maintaining pace is a shared obligation. When one group falls behind, the impact ripples throughout the field, causing delays for everyone and negatively affecting the flow and experience of the round. By understanding your role in managing pace, you contribute to smoother, fairer, and more enjoyable competitions for all.

GRACE KIM - OATLAND’S GC ALLUMNI

Many members enjoyed watching the thrilling conclusion of the Women’s Amundi Evian Masters on Monday, where Australia’s Grace Kim stormed home with an incredible eagle–birdie–eagle finish to claim her first Major championship.

What some may not be aware of is Grace’s connection to Oatlands Golf Club, where she was a junior member from 2012 to 2018. While she is best known in recent years as an Avondale member, the Club can be proud to have played a small part in the journey of Australia’s newest Major champion.

This latest success adds to Grace’s already impressive resume, which includes victories in the Australian Girls’ Championship, NSW Women’s Amateur, and Australian Women’s Amateur. We congratulate Grace on this incredible achievement and look forward to watching her continued success on the LPGA Tour.

DEVELOPMENT UPDATE

Members will have noticed activity on the 12th hole, where early works contractors have set up their site office and conducted test hole digs ahead of construction of the temporary car park. Earthworks are expected to begin shortly, and the green waste area beside hole 15 is being cleared to store the fill.

We have been advised that the 18th hole will remain in play for another week or two, so members should make sure to play it while time still permits. We will inform you as soon as we receive confirmation of its closure. In the meantime, please use the existing pathway between the 12th and 18th holes to access the newly configured hole.

To help maintain pace of play, you may choose to call up the group behind on the spare hole if the Par 5 fairway isn’t yet clear—but please ensure your safety by standing at the back of the green and observing tee shots carefully.

TEMPORARY CLUBHOUSE UPDATE

Members are advised that carpeting of the temporary Clubhouse facility will be performed early next week. We ask all members to avoid wheeling the golf buggies through the building from the time forward. Golfers using the practice studios are requested to leave their bag / buggy outside, and just bring in the clubs they require for their practice / lesson.

FROM THE COURSE

Course staff spent most of Monday tidying up the course, after the winds last weekend left the course littered with leaf debris. The usual process was employed with the blowers removing the leaf debris from the fairway and green surrounds, blowing it into the rough so the vacuum could sweep it up. This material is then dumped into mulch areas around the course where it starts to break down into organic matter.

Course staff have started to remove the turf from the 12th green which we plan to use as the surface of the temporary putting green on the 18th tee. This work will commence next week, and will involve the team cutting out the existing turf to a depth of 300mm to provide a soil profile with enough depth so we can cut holes in the green.

Herbicide applications to control Winter Grass weeds in collars and aprons have started, with the 1st and 13th greens sprayed on Tuesday morning. These applications should control these weeds quickly and produce clean/even playing surfaces. Tee complexes will be treated with a different herbicide to control the same weed, with watering in of this herbicide required as it is absorbed by the root system of the Winter Grass weeds.

The volunteers were on course Monday morning focusing on tidying up the gardens around Farmer Tunk’s Hut, which is located between the 6th green and 7th tee. The idea with this work was to remove some of the Agapanthus plants and relocate them to other parts of the course. This will benefit members searching for stray balls in this garden when playing the new 19th / 7th hole and reduce the impact on the speed of play. Painting within the temporary Clubhouse was also completed through the week. Thank you to everyone involved with these works, your assistance is always very much appreciated.

Greens will be cut on both mornings this weekend. Garry will be setting pins on Saturday morning, and I will be setting them on Sunday morning.

Happy Golfing
The Course Team.

2025 WINTER MEDAL
