OATLANDS CUP & SALVER

Congratulations to Oatlands GC member Linda Gyzen, who claimed victory in Monday’s Ladies Oatlands Cup & Anniversary Salver with an impressive score of 79, winning on a countback from young Jia You (Oatlands GC). Linda topped a strong field of nearly 50 competitors representing a number of Sydney clubs.

The Nett event of the Oatlands Cup was won by Elanora – and former Oatlands GC – member Brenda Chalmers, who returned an excellent score of 70. Brenda and Linda are pictured together following the trophy presentation.

In the Anniversary Salver, local member Katrina Davidson prevailed with a terrific score of 42 points, finishing two shots clear of Danielle Cordina, who claimed second place with 40 points.

It was another wonderful day of golf, highlighted by plenty of compliments for the outstanding work of Dom and his team on the course’s presentation.

MEN'S OATLANDS CUP

The Men’s Oatlands Cup was contested last weekend, attracting a strong field of 68 members and visitors from clubs across the Sydney metropolitan area. The standout performance of the day came from young Liam Jordan (Manly Golf Club), who claimed victory with an exceptional scratch round of 68. Jordan’s score saw him narrowly edge out Tom Crockart (North Ryde), who finished just one shot back with a 69, followed closely by Jackson Fennell (North Ryde) on 70. It was a tightly fought contest befitting one of the Club’s most prestigious championships.

In the Nett division, the honors went to Nathan Annen (Fox Hills), who earned the top spot by a single stroke over Oatlands’ own Christian Fong, who returned an excellent nett 68. With an average handicap of just 4, this year’s event once again showcased the depth of talent within both the Club and the wider Sydney golfing community, including 32 visiting players who added to the competitive atmosphere.

First contested in 1959 to commemorate the Club’s acquisition of the course, the Oatlands Cup has  produced a distinguished list of champions, among them Jack Newton (1967), Steve Elkington (1982), and David Ecob (1985)—all players who went on to make significant marks on the game.

 DEVELOPMENT UPDATE

Members playing golf this weekend will notice the significant progress made on the old clubhouse demolition, which is now largely complete. The final wall—the hallway leading to the men's locker room—came down on Thursday lunchtime. Cleanup of the remaining debris and removal of the concrete slab are now underway, with this phase expected to be finished by early December.

The surface for the temporary car park was laid this week and has been given a few days to settle. Line marking is scheduled for early next week, along with sealing works on the entry and exit points off Bettington Road. While an exact opening date for the new temporary car park is yet to be confirmed, members will no doubt have seen—and appreciated—the extensive work that has gone into preparing this facility for our use over the coming years.

HOLE IN ONE

Congratulations to Peter Cox, who achieved his first-ever Hole-in-One on Wednesday during the Black Tee competition. Peter’s ace came on the notoriously challenging 2nd hole, which measures well over 200 meters, making Peter’s achievement all the more impressive.

His perfectly struck shot earned him a well-deserved 5 points and a moment he’ll remember for years to come.

Well done, Peter, on this outstanding accomplishment!

FROM THE COURSE

Rainfall for the week 2.5mm
Rainfall for the year 1092.5mm

With the temporary car park now close to completion and all trenching finished, the course team has commenced restoration works around the putting green and 1st tee. These disturbed areas have been rotary-hoed, with an ideal growing medium added and blended into the profile. The surfaces will then been consolidated and levelled to ensure a seamless transition into the surrounding turf.

The drainage corridor across the putting green will be re-turfed with couch, as the recent trenching disturbed the sub-base and required removal of the existing drainage. Given the development fencing is scheduled for installation along the top side of the green, a decision on reinstating this area as putting surface will be revisited once the development works are complete.

Further repairs have been carried out on the track-mark area between the new 8th and 9th holes, along with the end of the Geohex path through the 9th flyover. These areas have also been rotary-hoed, reshaped with additional soil, and levelled in preparation for re-turfing. All replacement turf is scheduled for delivery next Wednesday, with laying planned for Wednesday and Thursday.

This week, greens and surrounds were treated for Argentine Stem Weevil—a highly destructive summer pest capable of causing significant turf damage under hot, humid conditions. Tee complexes were also retreated for mites, with a growth stimulant added to enhance turf health and presentation.

Greens will be cut both mornings this weekend. Garry will set pins on Saturday, and I will be setting them on Sunday.

Happy Golfing
The Course Team.

TURTLE SIGHTINGS

Members may begin to notice local native turtles crossing the fairways over the coming weeks. With increased humidity and summer rainfall, turtles are on the move as their nesting season begins.

Members are asked not to touch or move the turtles, but instead to take a photo and notify the Pro Shop team. These sightings help the Club and researchers monitor turtle activity around the course and will be shared with Professor Ricky Spencer from Western Sydney University, who will visit the site to collect and incubate eggs as part of the 4 Million Turtles conservation program.

LADIES SUMMER FOURSOMES DRAW

Entries for the Ladies Summer Foursomes have now closed, and the draw was completed yesterday afternoon (Thursday, 20th November). The first round will commence next Monday, 24th November, with matches to be played on the Thursday 27th November, Monday 1st December and the Final on Thursday, 4th December.

The draw can be found below:

 MONITORING OF PLAYING ROUNDS

Members are reminded that Club Management conducts monthly reporting on course usage, including the number of rounds played by individual members. This ensures that Lifestyle, Country, and Non-Playing members, as well as introduced guests, remain within the annual playing quotas attached to their respective categories.

When members approach these limits, they receive a courtesy reminder outlining the rounds permitted under their membership type and, where appropriate, are encouraged to consider upgrading their category to avoid any disruption to playing privileges. We’re always pleased to see members enjoying their golf and the camaraderie within the Club, and these processes help maintain fairness and consistency for everyone.

Members wishing to upgrade their membership category can do so at any time by contacting Kathy Bright at: administration@oatlandsgolf.com.au.

CHRISTMAS CHEER

Members are advised that the Club has several Christmas themed events coming up, and we encourage you to lock these dates into your diary.

The schedule begins with the Men’s Captain’s vs President’s Golf Day on Saturday, 6th December, played as an AM and PM shotgun start. Held in conjunction with this event will be the Annual Trophy Presentation, recognizing winners of the Club’s 2025 trophy events. This year’s presentation will be less formal than in previous years and will take place following both the morning and afternoon shotgun starts for winners in attendance.

On Wednesday, 10th December, the Club will host the Annual Christmas Cheer Competition, again with AM and PM shotgun starts. In the spirit of the season, prizes will be Christmas hams rather than the usual competition vouchers. Due to the limited capacity of the temporary clubhouse and the typically high attendance on this day, members do not need to be present in the clubhouse to claim their prize. Instead, winners may collect their ham from the Bar staff over the following week.

The Women’s Christmas Cheer Day will follow on Thursday, 11th December. For this event, winners must be present in the Club after their round to collect their hams, to help maintain the festive atmosphere and as the clubhouse is expected to comfortably accommodate those participating.

Our final Christmas Cheer event will be held on Sunday, 14th December, where the day’s competition winners will also receive a Christmas ham—offering plenty of opportunities for members to win part of their Christmas lunch or dinner this festive season.

Further details on all events will be provided in upcoming editions of the Members’ Newsletter.
