The East Coast rain bomb has been and gone with the course escaping
relatively unharmed. Whilst the 60mm of rain across Monday night and Tuesday
closed the course on Wednesday, we didn’t lose any trees from the strong winds
and only the bunkers on the 12th, 17th, and 18th
holes which weren’t relined with new cloth liner are the only bunkers holding
water.
With the early works beginning soon across the 12th and 18th
fairways, the course team is taking every opportunity to salvage as much as we
can from these two holes. With the help of the volunteers, the course team has
removed all of the fairway sprinkler heads from the 12th, so they
can be used elsewhere on the course to replace/repair other fairway sprinklers.
We have been stripping the turf from the 12th fairway in previous
weeks to replace/repair thin or worn areas on other fairways. This week we have
put the rotary hoe through the 17th flyover which has been a very
bumpy area of the course for many years. Material from the 8th
flyover stockpile has been brought in to add some shape and volume to the 17th
flyover, without increasing the height of the playing surface too much. This
coming Monday with the help of the volunteers, we are planning to cut and
remove enough turf from the 12th fairway to re-turf this entire area.
The two shipping storage containers have been installed with course staff
preparing the area in front of the containers with Geohex and road base so that
proshop staff and members can safely access these containers in all weather
conditions. The 1st fairway was verti drained on Monday to repair
any small wheel marks from the delivery truck, with the verti draining also
beneficial for the playing surface after this week’s rainfall.
The volunteers were on course Monday morning performing a
bunker run in front of the competition players, checking drainage pits were
clear ahead of the rain, removing sprinkler heads from the 12th
fairway, and proshop tasks. Additional work was also completed by several of
these Monday volunteers, painting the proshop on Thursday and Friday. Thank you
to everyone that has volunteered their time at the club this week. Your
assistance is always very much appreciated.
Greens will be cut on both mornings this weekend. I will be setting pins on Saturday and Garry will set them on Sunday.
Happy Golfing
The Course Team.
