LADIES CLOSING DAY

The temporary clubhouse and food truck hosted their biggest event to date with the running of the Ladies Closing Day yesterday. Over 90 lady members attended the event, which saw Club staff making use of every available inch of space both inside and outside the clubhouse to accommodate the crowd.

Chef Andrew Yang prepared a delicious smoked salmon lunch, which was thoroughly enjoyed by all in attendance. Many of our ladies embraced the Christmas theme, coordinating their outfits beautifully to add extra colour and fun to the day.

Congratulations to the day’s winners — Rosemary Jones, Sally Wolrige, Louise Carlin & Jill Davey — who returned a fantastic score of 99 points. Trophy winners from throughout the year were also recognized and celebrated, each receiving a pair of Club-monogrammed champagne flutes in acknowledgment of their achievements.

A highlight of the day was the recognition of Margaret Patterson (pictured below), who celebrated an incredible 50 years of membership, whilst the big winner of the day was Jenny Park, who collected several trophies to cap off what has been a very successful year.

A heartfelt thank you to all who attended, and to our wonderful Food and Beverage Team for ensuring the smooth and enjoyable running of this special event on the Club calendar.

DEVELOPMENT UPDATE

Members will have noticed the significant progress made this week on the clubhouse demolition. All roof tiles were removed on Monday ahead of the commencement of structural demolition that afternoon. The work is being carried out by two of the contractor's heavy earthmoving machines and is expected to be completed within the first half of December. Contractor staff are present throughout the demolition process to separate bricks, timber supports and other materials for recycling.

The temporary car park is also nearing completion and is expected to open to member traffic within the next few weeks. The car park surface is scheduled to be laid next week, after which the line marking and wheel stops will be installed.

ENCOURAGE SHIELD

Commiserations to our two fantastic Encourage Shield sides, who both finished second in their respective divisions following the weekend’s final matches of the season.

Our Oatlands Blue side in Section 2 finished their season with a strong home victory over Killara (4-2). Despite going through the season undefeated with 3 wins and 2 draws, they narrowly missed out on progression by a single individual game, finishing tied with Ryde Parramatta.

Meanwhile, the Oatlands White side faced Castle Hill at St Michaels in a winner-takes-all match to progress to the finals. A dominant Castle Hill side claimed victory 5.5 games to 0.5, leaving our White team in second place with 3 wins, 1 draw, and 1 loss.

It was a successful season for both of our junior representative teams, demonstrating great skill, teamwork, and sportsmanship. Special thanks go to Club Professional Jeremy Ward and the many parents who assisted with team management. With two strong sides competing this year, the future looks bright for future Oatlands’ representative teams.

SUNDAY COMPETITION PRIZE BREAKDOWN

Following member feedback and a review by the Match Committee, the Club will be introducing a revised prize breakdown for the Sunday competition, effective this weekend.

Under the new structure, prizes will be awarded to grade winners for both men (A, B & C Grades) and women (Divisions 1 & 2), along with a medley fourball event. This replaces the previous format of separate male and female winners, mixed fourball, and member fourball prizes.

This adjustment better reflects the composition of the Sunday competition field, based on participation data collected over the past six months, and provides a fairer opportunity for players across a wider range of handicaps. The Club hopes members appreciate this improvement to prize distribution and will continue to review results to ensure the format remains aligned with member participation.

FROM THE COURSE

Rainfall for the week 0.0mm
Rainfall for the year 1090.0mm

Another busy week for the course team this week with some repair work being performed to collars, spray applications continued on fairways, roughs, and green surrounds, and positive signs regarding the 14th pond.

Returfing of larger bare areas on collars around the 1st, 14th, 16th and 18th greens has been performed this week using turf from the former 12th ladies tee pad. Course staff firstly cut out and removed all material from the bare areas using our manual turf cutter. The same machine is then used to cut out strips of turf from the old 12th tee, with staff using a depth gauge on the machine to match up the two areas to reduce the amount of preparation work in the areas on the collars. While the colour of the turf that we have transplanted onto the collars isn’t lush green, the team is keeping the water up to this turf in the warm weather, and it should settle in fine in a week or two.

Growth regulator, insecticide, and pre-emergent herbicide applications have continued across fairways, roughs, and green surrounds this week, with only the 5th, 7th and 10th holes left to be done. Growth regulation is now evident in areas treated last week, and insect control has been effective—Billbug activity and associated damage have been observed in untreated rough areas between trees, while no signs or symptoms are present in treated zones.

The 14th pond has improved this week following advice from our turtle expert Professor Ricky Spencer, suggesting that turning the aerator back on would help introduce oxygen back into the waterway. We have also added beneficial bacteria and enzymes which consume excess nutrients and reduce organic matter. These remedies have improved the smell and colour of the water, with the ducks and Water Hens returning this week. We are still awaiting information from the local council regarding any further water testing requirements.

While course staff weren’t graced with the glow of the Aurora Australis this week, we were gifted an epiphany of our own on Thursday morning — as if from the heavens, a group of angels appeared out of nowhere to grace the course for the Ladies’ Closing Day festivities (see photo above).

Our volunteers were on course this week installing the rejuvenated bronze tee plates back onto the tees. This week the green, yellow and white plates were installed on tees 1 thru to 9, except for the new 7th tee. Instead of the small black tombstone, the plates are now attached to a paver and set down into the ground. This has been done for mowing maintenance and for a less cluttered appearance of the tee complexes. Drainage pits were also trimmed and cleaned, and David was on course Thursday morning divotting fairways. Thank you to everyone that volunteered their time this week.

Greens will be cut and rolled on Saturday morning, with Joel setting pins. Greens will be cut on Sunday morning and I will be setting pins.

Happy Golfing
The Course Team.

MEN'S & WOMEN'S OATLANDS
CUP & SALVER

Two of Oatlands’ most prestigious events are set to take place in the coming days — the Men’s Oatlands Cup on Saturday, 15th November, and the Ladies Oatlands Anniversary Cup & Salver on Monday, 17th November. As one would expect, there is a strong representation of Oatland's GC members in each field hoping to add their name to the list of Champions.

Men’s Oatlands Cup Draw

Ladies Anniversary Cup & Salver Draw

First contested in 1959 to commemorate the Club’s acquisition of the course, the Oatlands Cup has produced a distinguished list of winners including Jack Newton (1967), Steve Elkington (1982), and David Ecob (1985). The Ladies Anniversary Cup & Salver, an 18-hole Stroke event played from the Red tees, forms part of the Golf NSW Jean Derrin Series, and is open to women across two handicap divisions — (+ to 18) for the Cup and (18 to 30) for the Salver.

TURTLE SIGHTINGS

Members may begin to notice local native turtles crossing the fairways over the coming weeks. With increased humidity and summer rainfall, turtles are on the move as their nesting season begins.

Members are asked not to touch or move the turtles, but instead to take a photo and notify the Pro Shop team. These sightings help the Club and researchers monitor turtle activity around the course and will be shared with Professor Ricky Spencer from Western Sydney University, who will visit the site to collect and incubate eggs as part of the 4 Million Turtles conservation program.
