CLUBHOUSE UPDATE

Following this week’s farewell for long-term Gold Member, Col Barr, preparations will now commence for the relocation of the Bar and Kitchen services to the temporary clubhouse. This work, to be undertaken over the coming weeks by Clubhouse staff and our dedicated volunteers, will inevitably bring some disruption to normal clubhouse operations, and members are advised of the following measures:

      Clubhouse Toilets

From Monday 15 September, the men's and ladies toilets within the clubhouse will be closed. Members are asked to use the facilities within the respective Men’s and Ladies’ Locker Rooms. This will allow volunteers to remove the privacy doors and screens for repurposing in the temporary clubhouse bathrooms.

Kitchen Closure

The Kitchen will close from Monday 15 September to allow staff to complete a deep clean ahead of the storage and sale of kitchen equipment and furnishings. During this time, the sandwich hut will operate so members can continue to purchase lunch within the Clubhouse.

Bar Operations

The Bar will remain open in the clubhouse for the short term. However, the range of tap beer may be reduced as kegs, fridges, and glassware are relocated to the temporary premises. The coffee machine will remain in the existing Bar until just prior to the opening of the temporary clubhouse, at which point it will be relocated.

Pro Shop & Office

Members are reminded that the Pro Shop and Office staff have already been relocated to the temporary clubhouse in recent weeks.

Once all operations are established in the new premises, members will be notified, and we look forward to welcoming you with the same friendly service in the temporary facility.

LOCAL RULES UPDATE

During the past week some changes have occurred around the course in respect to safety fencing and new course equipment. These changes have warranted a refresh of some of our local rules effective tomorrow (Saturday 13th September):

Red Penalty Area – No Play Zone (behind the new 18th green)

  • The fenced-off area is to be treated as a Red Penalty Area: No Play Zone, with play prohibited.

  • Relief must be taken under penalty of one stroke by one of the following options:

    • Stroke and Distance: Return to the spot from which the previous stroke was played.

    • Two Club-Lengths: Drop a ball within two club-lengths of the point where the ball last crossed the margin of the penalty area, no nearer the hole.

    • Drop Zone: Drop a ball within one club-length of the designated drop stake (this may be closer to the hole).

Autonomous Mowers & Charging Stations

  • Both the mowers and the charging stations are to be treated as immovable course infrastructure. No line-of-sight relief is available (however members are asked to be respectful of this new course equipment).

  • If a ball strikes a mower or charging station, it is considered rub of the green and must be played from where it comes to rest.

  • If a mower moves a stationary ball, the mower is deemed an outside influence and the ball must be dropped at the approximate spot where it previously rested, without penalty.

We trust this clears up any questions regarding the local rules for these new conditions on the course.

HOLE IN ONE

Congratulations to Mark Robinson, who has etched his name into Oatlands history by recording the Club’s first ever hole-in-one on what is now the 13th hole. At the time of his ace, played on Sunday, the hole was still designated as the 12th, however with the introduction of the new 7th hole this week, the numbering of the back nine has since been adjusted.

To make the occasion even more special, the ace came on Mark’s very first shot of the day and on Father’s Day — a truly memorable gift and one that will no doubt be long remembered. With the new 7th hole now in play, attention turns to which member will be the first to record a hole-in-one on this picturesque and challenging par 3.

18th HOLE SHOOTOUT

Last Friday saw the running of the 18th Hole Shootout, a fun Friday evening event held to farewell the Club’s iconic closing hole. Close to 50 members took part, each with the challenge of hitting nearest to the pin, with prizes awarded to the overall winner as well as those who managed to find the green and then hole a putt in the post-shootout putt-off.

Following the on-course action, participants gathered in the clubhouse to enjoy a delicious buffet dinner and share stories of the many great (and sometimes heartbreaking) moments experienced on the 18th over the years. The evening provided a relaxed and fitting send-off to a hole that has been the stage for countless memories during the history of the Club.

FROM THE COURSE

Rainfall for the week                                     63.0 mm
Rainfall for 2025                                        1036.5 mm

The warm day on Monday was great for the course with our couch tees, collars and surrounds looking that little bit brighter in appearance. While we are still a month away from seeing any substantial growth on these couch surfaces, we are performing maintenance tasks to ensure that when the soil temperatures are favorable, the couch will have nothing holding it back. This week all collars and aprons have been scarified to remove thatch material, which is basically grass clippings and dead material which builds up over the winter months. The removal of the thatch will improve moisture movement and infiltration rates and allow any sunlight and warmth to heat sub-soils faster.

All greens were treated with a seaweed based product this week to aid the recovery process, especially those greens which were covered by the topdressing sand during the week of the wet renovations. The greens have responded to this application and are looking happier and healthier heading into the weekend. We are planning the first sand dusting application to all greens since renovations, but this application will see far less sand applied to putting surfaces.

The 18th hole closed on Monday with the new 7th hole coming into play. Course staff removed a large section of the 18th fairway and used the turf to repair the track marks across the 14th fairway. This turf should establish quickly and be a real improvement to this area.

Members will have noticed, we now have two autonomous mowers operating on the course, currently maintaining fairways 3, 4, 6, 8, 9, 11, and 12. One mower is responsible for fairways 3, 4, and 6, while the other handles fairways 8, 9, 11, and 12. The quality and presentation of these fairways are equal to those mown by our traditional equipment, so members should not notice any difference in the playing surface.

It’s important to note that these autonomous mowers are not replacing staff. In fact, they allow us to make better use of our team by freeing up one staff member who would otherwise spend two days each week mowing. This means more time and attention can now be directed to other important tasks around the course.

Our volunteers were on course Monday morning performing a bunker run in front of the competition players, practice nets were checked / repaired / cleaned, bronze tee marker rejuvenation work continued, and assistance with the turfing across the 14th flyover area. Thank you, gentlemen, for your assistance this week, your help and support is always appreciated.

Greens will be cut and rolled on Saturday morning and then cut again on Sunday morning. I will be setting pins on Saturday with Joel setting them on Sunday, following painted dots on the greens as he learns and gains experience.

Happy Golfing
The Course Team.

18TH GREEN PRACTICE

Members are advised that with the 18th hole now out of play due to the construction of the temporary car park, the 18th green and bunkers will be made available for member practice. Dom and his team will maintain the green at the same frequency and mowing height as the rest of the course, and the bunkers will also be raked on a regular basis. Members are kindly asked to rake the bunkers after use to ensure they are left in the best possible condition for others.

It is expected that this green and bunker complex will remain available for member practice until mid-October, providing an excellent opportunity to sharpen both short game and bunker skills during the Championship period.

CLUB CHAMPIONSHIPS

The 2025 Club Championship qualifying rounds will be held on Saturday 20th and 27th September, and with a capacity field expected, members are reminded of the importance of maintaining good etiquette on the course. Pace of play is essential to ensuring an enjoyable experience for all competitors, so please keep up with the group in front, putt out where possible, and adopt a Ready Golf approach.

Equally important is the presentation of the course, which is a shared responsibility among all players. We ask members to take extra care in repairing pitch marks, raking bunkers and filling divots. These actions not only protect the course but also ensure that it is presented in the best possible condition for the duration of the championships. Patience and respect for fellow members is also encouraged, particularly in the first round where first tee nerves and a touch of anxiety are natural.

Finally, please note that no guest, female or lifestyle member bookings are permitted during the two Club Championship qualifying rounds, this is to ensure all members wishing to contest the Club Championship qualifying get the opportunity. Following the Club Championship qualifying, Saturday competition timesheets will initially open to members only, with member guests permitted to book within 48 hours of play, subject to availability and provided no waitlist exists. These measures are in place to ensure members are given priority access for Saturday competition play.

WOMEN'S HANDICAP PENNANT

Unfortunately, our Women’s Sunday Handicap Pennant team went down to a strong Camden side last weekend, 5.5 to 0.5. Team number one, Ria Jang, battled hard to secure a half in her match, though the remaining results fell in favour of the opposition.

The team currently sits in fifth place on the ladder with one round remaining, to be played this weekend at Oatlands GC against Penrith Golf Club. While a win won’t be enough to progress to the playoffs, the team will be aiming to finish their season on a high and make the most of their home course knowledge.

We wish the team the very best for this weekend’s match.

HP EVANS MATCH PLAY

The quarter finals of the 2025 HP Evans Knockout were played on Saturday 6th September, with many of the matches decided by convincing margins, all concluding before the 17th tee.

Our four semi-finalists are:

  • Andrew Tohme v Noel Bae

  • Peter Crawford v Chris Osterlund

The Club extends its best wishes to all competitors as they prepare for another weekend of exciting golf. We look forward to seeing who will progress to the final after this weekend’s matches.

MATCH PLAY INDEX FOR HP EVANS

Members are asked to consider the impact of the new 7th hole, for the upcoming HP Evans semi final and final matches.

Oatlands Golf Club uses the match play stroke index developed by the R&A, which determines the holes players give or receive strokes. Importantly, the match play index must follow the order of play on the course.
