COURSE CARE: DIVOT REPAIR

Following recent heavy rain, many of the divots on our course have had their sand washed out, leaving bare and exposed patches of turf. As we prepare for the upcoming growing season, now is an important time to help maintain the quality of our fairways by properly filling divots.

Why does it matter?

When a divot is left unfilled, it creates a gap in the turf that not only affects the playability of the course, but also becomes a prime location for weed invasion and turf disease. Without sand, the exposed soil is compacted by foot and cart traffic, which severely slows grass regrowth—or can even prevent it entirely.

In contrast, when a divot is carefully filled with sand, the benefits are clear:

  • Faster recovery: Studies show that divots filled with sand regrow turf up to twice as quickly as those left bare. The sand helps protect the roots and seeds, maintains moisture, and provides a level surface for new grass to establish.

  • Better playability: Sand-filled divots create a more even lie for other golfers.

  • Healthier turf: Sand helps maintain soil structure, reduces compaction, and gives grass the best chance to regrow strong and healthy.

What can members do?

As the course dries out and we enter the peak growing season, we kindly ask all members to:

  • Fill any divots—your own and others you may come across—with sand from the sand buckets provided.

  • Avoid overfilling. Level the sand with your foot or club so that it’s flush with the surrounding turf. Mounds of sand can smother surrounding grass and cause uneven lies.

  • Encourage playing partners to do the same—it's a small act that helps everyone.

Maintaining our course is a shared responsibility, and your help makes a noticeable difference. A well-repaired divot today is a seamless fairway tomorrow.

FROM THE COURSE

A very wet course for the team to manage this week, requiring extra care during maintenance to avoid damaging playing surfaces. Course staff exercised caution throughout, adapting our practices to the saturated conditions. Fortunately, warm and sunny weather on Tuesday and Wednesday helped accelerate the drying process. However, light rain early Thursday morning followed by the heavy cloud cover slowed progress and proved less helpful in improving turf conditions.

With the course closed last weekend, the Cockatoo’s and Corella’s had the course to themselves and caused lots of damage to many of the greens. These birds cause this type of damage to many courses throughout Australia, and no one knows why they do it as there is no food source for them in a golf green. The presence of players and staff is usually enough to scare these birds away from our greens, so they were opportunists on this occasion. This damage required plugging out with plugs taken from the nursery green to complete this work.

The turf that we salvaged from the 12th green which has been stored outside the maintenance shed was transferred up to the 18th tee this week, with this proving to be a difficult task as the rolls of turf had started to take root in the less than ideal soil at the shed area. This turf was also saturated as rainfall runoff comes down the gravel roadway and straight into the maintenance shed area. Whilst the turf on this temporary putting green looks very uneven and bumpy now, topdressing and rolling will be performed as this turf establishes itself.

The volunteers were on course Monday morning with their course work limited due to the wet surface conditions. The Fig Tree on the left hand side of the 19th hole was trimmed to provide a better visual of the 9th tee when playing this new hole. The plan is to tidy up the entire area below this 19th hole as it has a hidden natural waterfall over the rocks where the water from the 6th creek flows as it makes its way back down towards the 9th pond. Work also continued with the temporary clubhouse facilities with the volunteers performing further improvements to what is shaping up to be a lovely post-round spot for the membership. Thank you to everyone involved this week, your assistance is always very much appreciated.

Greens will be cut on both mornings this weekend. Garry will be setting pins on Saturday morning, and I will be setting them on Sunday morning.

Happy Golfing
The Course Team.

LOCKER ROOM CLEAR OUT

As part of preparations for the temporary relocation of our facilities, we kindly remind all members that lockers must be cleared out by Saturday, 31 August.

From early September, our staff and volunteers will begin moving lockers and memorabilia into secure storage, and it's essential that lockers are completely empty to assist with this process.

What you need to do:

  • Please remove all items from your locker before the end of August.

  • If you are unable to visit the Club prior to this date, please contact the office and we will happily arrange for your locker to be emptied on your behalf.

  • Any items remaining after 31 August may be removed and, if not able to be identified or returned, will be respectfully discarded or donated.

As communicated in previous eNews updates, the Club will apply a pro-rata credit to the house accounts of members who currently pay for locker hire. This will cover the unused seven months of the membership year following the relocation.

We appreciate your understanding on this matter—it’s a necessary step to ensure a smooth and organized transition for everyone.

SILENT AUCTION

As part of next weekend’s Farewell to the Clubhouse celebrations, the Club will be hosting a silent auction of select memorabilia that is not being retained or stored for future display in the new Clubhouse.

The silent auction will be located in the breakout area of the Clubhouse and will feature a range of items, including:

  • Black and white course photographs formerly displayed in the Function Room

  • A signed Don Bradman cricket bat

  • Artwork donated by some of our reciprocal clubs

  • Other collected and donated memorabilia from across the years

In addition, the Club has amassed a large selection of novels and biographies over the years. These will be displayed nearby and will be free to any members who wish to take them home.

We understand that many of these items hold sentimental value. Please be assured that careful consideration has been given to what can be preserved and stored. However, with close to 100 years of Club history and limited storage space, some difficult—but necessary—decisions have had to be made. Rather than see these pieces forgotten in storage or left behind, we believe they’re best enjoyed by the members who value them most.

All funds raised through the silent auction will go directly toward supporting Junior Development programs and coaching initiatives at the Club—investing in the future of our game and our community.

We encourage all members to take part in this special opportunity to own a piece of our shared history.

FAREWELL TO CLUBHOUSE

With early works underway and the redevelopment of the Oatlands Clubhouse soon to begin, now is the perfect time to come together and celebrate everything the current building has meant to us. To mark the occasion, the Club is hosting a special ‘Farewell to the Clubhouse’ evening on Saturday 16th August.

We’re thrilled to already have over 200 members booked in for what promises to be a memorable and meaningful evening. The format of the night will remain deliberately casual and social, with canapés, shared platters, and a drink on arrival. While tables and chairs will be set up in the Clubhouse, the layout is intended to encourage movement, mingling, and conversation, giving everyone a chance to connect and reflect on the many memories made here.

A live band will bring the night to life with favourites from the 70s, 80s, and 90s, setting the tone for relaxed dancing, storytelling, and shared nostalgia. A few short speeches will pay tribute to the Club’s rich history, and a silent auction featuring selected memorabilia will take place—with all proceeds supporting Junior Development initiatives at the Club.

For those who have already booked, we kindly ask that you confirm the names of your attendees with Chelsea by phone (02) 9630 4444 or via email at bar@oatlandsgolf.com.au, to assist with planning and catering. Members are welcome to use their birthday vouchers toward this event.

If you haven’t secured your place yet—don’t miss out. Join us for this special farewell and help give the old Clubhouse the send-off it deserves.

FINAL BETTINGTON &
BISTRO 94 DINNERS

As we approach the move to the temporary clubhouse facility, members are warmly encouraged to book now for the final Bistro 94 and Bettington Restaurant dinners to be held in our current Clubhouse.

Due to the limited space and catering capabilities of the temporary venue, we regret that we won’t be able to continue the Bettington dinners in their current form. As such, this upcoming dinner will be the last of its kind—at least until we open the new Clubhouse.

This also represents members’ last opportunity to redeem birthday vouchers at a Bettington dinner. With 100 attendees at the July event, we expect this final dinner to reach capacity quickly, so early booking is strongly encouraged.

Our Bistro 94 Friday evenings have also proven a great success, welcoming both members and the local community to the Club. However, due to similar space and kitchen limitations, it is unlikely that these can continue in their present form once relocated.

With September dedicated to final functions and the transition to the temporary facility, we encourage members to support and enjoy these popular dining experiences while they’re still available.

We’re excited to explore new dining and member engagement initiatives once established in the temporary Clubhouse, and we thank you for your continued support during this period of transition.

Book now to avoid disappointment—we’d love to see you there!

WS TARGETT MATCH PLAY

Congratulations to the pairings of Charlie Kim / Kate Choi and Rob Bechara Jr / Lisa Bechara who won their semi finals a couple of weeks ago in the WS Targett Match Play. Unfortunately the original date of the Final was washed out but this has been rescheduled and is being played this Sunday the 10th of August.

The WS Targett Trophy carries great significance at the Club, having been donated by Bill Targett, who joined Oatlands in 1956 and was elected to Committee that same year. Bill served as Captain from 1960–1962 and President from 1967–1969, and was honored with Life Membership in 1979. The trophy has been contested annually since 1981, with the inaugural title claimed by Col Barr and Jean Baker.
