GRASS REMOVAL FROM PUTTING GREEN

As earthworks continue—when weather permits—on the construction of the temporary car park, planning is progressing for the utility trenching scheduled to begin in early September. The trench will carry water, gas, electricity, and NBN services to the temporary Clubhouse and Oatlands House. It will run from Bettington Road, across the 12th and 18th holes, behind the 1st tee, and across the putting green to connect with both the temporary Clubhouse and the electrical box at the rear of Oatlands House (indicated by the yellow line on the image).

Although trenching is not expected to commence until September, turf from the northern end of the putting green will soon be removed to complete the temporary putting green on the 18th tee. Only the necessary grass will be taken at this stage to allow the new green to establish, with up to one-third of the existing putting green expected to be impacted once utility works are underway. This early removal will give the alternate green the best possible start and ensure a consistent roll across the putting surface.

TEMPORARY CLUBHOUSE UPDATE

The construction of our temporary clubhouse continues at an impressive pace, with several significant touches added over the past week.

In the Pro Shop, slat wall fittings are now in place, ready to showcase golfing merchandise, whilst in the lounge areas, the first photo and wall decorations have been mounted, giving the space a warm and familiar feel. Behind the bar, shelving and mirrors have been installed, combining style with functionality, while the front windows are now dressed with new curtains—expertly hemmed to length by member Joy Hawksley, whose handiwork has ensured a perfect fit.

Week by week, the clubhouse is transforming from a work site into a welcoming hub for members and guests. We extend our thanks to our wonderful team of volunteers for their time and effort.

FROM THE COURSE

Another 57mm of rain this week on an already sodden course has made the working week a very frustrating experience for course staff and members alike. The 4th, 7th, 8th, and top half of the 13th fairway are extremely wet after Thursday’s rain with the course being closed Thursday afternoon and Friday for safety concerns.

Fairways that weren’t too wet have been mown this week after nearly 4 weeks of being left alone. These fairways are looking great for this time of the year and after the recent wet weather. The sun is starting to rise higher in the sky ever so slightly which means the shade pattern across the fairways will start to disappear. More sunlight on these fairway surfaces, in conjunction with aeration practices, will see a gradual improvement in the appearance of the bleached looking fairways over the next month or so.

Work has started on a section of sub-surface drainage across the approach area to the new 7th / 19th green that has remained very wet throughout this wet weather period. The lines that have been trenched so far are working well even without any actual drainage pipe being installed in them yet. This work will continue next week during the renovation period.

The predicted weather for next week’s renovations isn’t ideal, with a call to be made over the weekend if they will proceed. Further rain will make it impossible to rub the sand into the open holes left behind by the verti drains. The spring renovation is important to perform on the greens, as it prepares the greens for the upcoming summer by introducing fresh growing medium into the soil profile via the heavy top dressing of sand. The deep verti-draining relieves built up compaction in the soil profile from the maintenance practices such as mowing and rolling of the greens surfaces.

The volunteers were present again on Monday morning with their work centered around the temporary clubhouse with the course too wet for vehicles. A small group of these volunteers had a game of golf at the end of the Wednesday afternoon field this week, with a few good shots and laughs shared by those involved. Thank you to everyone involved with this week’s work, your assistance is always very much appreciated.

Greens will be cut on both mornings this weekend. I will be setting pins on Saturday morning, with Garry setting them on Sunday morning.

Happy Golfing
The Course Team.

COURSE RENOVATIONS

Further to this week’s Course Report regarding the potential rescheduling of the August Green Renovations, the Greens Committee has confirmed that, should Course Superintendent Dom Yates determine a delay is necessary due to weather or course conditions, he will have the flexibility to reschedule. This approach ensures the best possible outcome for the course, with the important proviso that weekend play will not be impacted by any changes.

At this stage, the works are still planned to proceed as scheduled, with the course and practice facilities closed from Monday 18 to Wednesday 20 August. Should the works need to be postponed, alternative dates will be advised.

During the closure, Office and Pro Shop staff will present at the Club, although much of their time will be dedicated to cleaning out the existing office and relocating essential services to the temporary Clubhouse.

We appreciate members’ patience and understanding, and join everyone in hoping for dry weather so these essential works can proceed as planned.

LOCKER ROOM CLEAR OUT

Members are reminded to clear their lockers by Saturday, 31 August, ahead of the Club’s temporary relocation. From early September, staff and volunteers will move lockers and memorabilia into secure storage, so all lockers must be completely emptied. Those unable to visit before the deadline can contact the office to arrange assistance. Items left after the deadline may be removed and, if unclaimed, respectfully discarded or donated. As previously advised, members who pay for locker hire will receive a pro-rata credit for the unused seven months of the membership year.

SILENT AUCTION

This Saturday’s Farewell to the Clubhouse function will feature a special silent auction of select memorabilia not being retained or stored for the new Clubhouse. Held in the breakout area, the auction will include black-and-white course photographs from the Function Room, a signed Don Bradman cricket bat, artwork donated by reciprocal clubs, and other collected memorabilia from across the years. A large selection of novels and biographies will also be available nearby for members to take home free of charge.

While many items hold sentimental value, careful consideration has been given to what can be preserved, with limited storage meaning some difficult—but necessary—choices have been made. Rather than leave these pieces in storage, the Club wishes to see them enjoyed by members who value them most. All auction proceeds will support Junior Development programs and coaching initiatives, helping invest in the future of our game and community.

FAREWELL TO CLUBHOUSE

With the redevelopment of the Oatlands Clubhouse about to begin, this Saturday 16 August will be a near-capacity Farewell to the Clubhouse evening—one of the last chances to celebrate the building that has been at the heart of the Club for decades. Over 200 members are already booked for a relaxed and social night featuring canapés, shared platters, a drink on arrival, and a live band playing favourites from the 70s, 80s, and 90s. The evening will also include short speeches honoring the Club’s history and a silent auction of selected memorabilia, with proceeds going toward Junior Development initiatives.

With close to 250 members attending, members are encouraged to car pool where possible or perhaps organize a lift or Uber so you can enjoy the night's festivities.

FINAL BETTINGTON &
BISTRO 94 DINNERS

Members are warmly encouraged to book now for the final Bistro 94 and Bettington Restaurant dinners to be held in our current Clubhouse.

Due to the limited space and catering capabilities of the temporary venue, we regret that we won’t be able to continue the Bettington dinners in their current form. As such, this upcoming dinner will be the last of its kind—at least until we open the new Clubhouse.

This also represents members’ last opportunity to redeem birthday vouchers at a Bettington dinner. With 100 attendees at the July event, we expect this final dinner to reach capacity quickly, so early booking is strongly encouraged.

Our Bistro 94 Friday evenings have also proven a great success, welcoming both members and the local community to the Club. However, due to similar space and kitchen limitations, it is unlikely that these can continue in their present form once relocated.

With September dedicated to final functions and the transition to the temporary facility, we encourage members to support and enjoy these popular dining experiences while they’re still available.

We’re excited to explore new dining and member engagement initiatives once established in the temporary Clubhouse, and we thank you for your continued support during this period of transition.

Book now to avoid disappointment—we’d love to see you there!

SUPER SENIOR PENNANT

Our latest match at Cumberland Golf Club against Massey Park was contested on a more even handicap level. The course was in excellent condition, despite numerous temporary tees and greens in place due to Cumberland’s major development works. The team fought hard, with every match going to the 17th and 18th holes. Wins were recorded by Phil Langdon and John Farrar, while Renato Monondgo finished square.

This week’s scheduled match at Massey Park was unfortunately washed out and has been rescheduled for 29 August. The next challenge awaits on Tuesday 19 August at Strathfield, as we continue the pursuit of that elusive first win.

WS TARGETT MATCH PLAY

After two consecutive weekends of course closures, the rescheduled WS Targett Match Play Final will be held this Sunday, 17 August, with Charlie Kim / Kate Choi facing Rob Bechara Jr / Lisa Bechara following their semi-final wins.

The WS Targett Trophy holds special significance at the Club, having been donated by Bill Targett—an influential member since 1956 who served as Captain, President, and was awarded Life Membership in 1979. Contested annually since 1981, when Col Barr and Jean Baker claimed the inaugural title, the trophy remains a cherished part of the Club’s history.

NEW PHONE SYSTEM

We’ve recently upgraded the Club’s phone system in preparation for our move into the temporary Clubhouse. For now, calls to (02) 9630 4444 are being diverted, so you may notice a different number from Wollongong appear on your screen — but rest assured, it’s still us at Oatlands Golf Club on the other end.

When you call, you’ll hear a refreshed set of menu options. The Pro Shop is still just a “Press 1” away, though some of the other options have changed.

One of the new features allows calls to be diverted to our administration staff’s mobile phones for ease of access while we operate from the temporary facilities. If you see staff using their mobiles, they’re simply connected to the new system through an app.

We look forward to speaking with you on the new system and continuing to provide the high level of service you expect in our temporary premises.
