FROM THE COURSERainfall for the week 3.0mm Rainfall for the year 1128.5mm
The course managed to get through the hot Friday and Saturday weather conditions with no ill effects to the greens; however, turf areas above drainage lines on tee pads are showing signs of moisture stress. This is why we haven’t installed drainage in any of our newly constructed tees, such as the 2nd, new 7th, or new 12th. The existing drainage lines are functioning as intended, but they are removing moisture from the profile too efficiently, meaning the water isn’t remaining available long enough for the turf to use. Edges of the fairways are also showing signs of moisture stress, especially around large tree bases, as the roots have encroached into the fairways chasing the moisture applied through the irrigation system. We are crossing our fingers that the predicted rainfall leading into and over the weekend actually arrives, as it would greatly assist in relieving the moisture stress in our tees and fairways. Members will have noticed the new path installed from the temporary car park to the 1st tee area. This will help with wear management from both cart and foot traffic and will be particularly beneficial during wet weather. The course team is now preparing the sides of the path so new turf can be laid and blended seamlessly into the existing surrounds. Leaf debris has covered the course most mornings this week, with the afternoon and evening wind changes causing this to occur. While the southerly changes bring some welcome cooling relief, the trees respond by shedding leaves and bark as part of their natural cooling process. Course staff have been busy on the blowers and vacuum all week to tidy up the course as much as possible. New fly traps have also been placed around the course after the initial season’s traps either filled up or dried out. Our volunteers were on the course Monday morning clearing debris and raking bunkers before continuing to install the green, yellow, and white tee plates into the ground, replacing the original small tombstones. Drainage pits were also cleared and trimmed around in readiness for the predicted rainfall. Thank you once again, gentlemen, for a very productive morning’s work. Your dedication, energy, and willingness to pitch in make a tremendous difference, and the course team genuinely appreciates everything you do. Greens will be cut on both mornings this weekend. Garry will be setting pins on Saturday morning, and I will be setting them on Sunday morning. Happy Golfing The Course Team. |
