From the Course

Rainfall for the Week: 0.0mm Rainfall for 2020: 789.5mm   Dam: 100%   Green Speed: 10.5 feet

This week the team has applied pigment and an iron based fertiliser to all fairways to add colour to these surfaces for presentation purposes, and also to attract as much heat from any available sunlight during these mild winter days. Our fairways are handling the winter conditions and heavy traffic well for this time of year. For this to continue we will start verti draining fairways again next week which will provide aeration to the root systems and help with the drying process after any rainfall.

The team has also made a start on renovating an area on the left hand side of the 17th fairway. This area has been a thin weak area for some time now. We have rotary hoed the top surface and added fill material to provide a good depth of growing medium so the turf doesn’t have to compete so much with the roots from the surrounding trees. This area will have some small mounding shaped into it, which will add some direction to how this hole is played.

Green surrounds, bunker surrounds and selected areas of rough have been mown this week to tidy up some winter growth in these areas. Herbicide applications for kikuyu in our couch surrounds have been performed this week, using caution not to spray any areas that may have the potential to runoff onto our greens with the predicted rain next week.

Greens were fertilised this week with a liquid fertiliser, with a soil penetrant also added to the tank mix. This soil penetrant works by moving moisture/ rainfall/ irrigation away from the surface and will provide a drier/ firmer putting surface, seeing the benefit of this application with next week’s rainfall.

The volunteers were on the course on Monday morning, raking bunkers before the competition, continued painting the soil and rubbish bin boxes on tees, started painting the car parking lines in the main car park and speed humps on the path at the 9th tee, gerni the sandstone wall of the 1st tee, cleared the drainage pits at the 10th and 11th tees and performed more clubhouse maintenance tasks. A very productive day once again gentlemen, so thank you for all your assistance this week.

Have good weekend

The Course Team

Golf Course Video – Green Speed Stimp Reading

A number of members have asked recently how the Course Team measure the speed of the greens. The process used which many members will have heard is called a “stimp reading”.

Rather than explain the process in writing, Course Superintendent Dom Yates has put together a short video demonstrating the process.

Thanks Dom.

Happy Hour Extended to Tuesday’s

With the Club open for trade and Friday Happy Hour from 4pm – 6pm gaining in popularity (and some exciting new initiatives soon to be announced) the Club are extending Happy Hour to include Tuesday’s from 3pm – 5pm.

There is a number of reasons for this and we would be telling pork pies (lies) if we didn’t say it was to get more people in the Clubhouse, however with the choice of day being the one that coincides with the Clubs only “social play only day” we are hoping to encourage the section of membership that are less active in the Clubhouse to join in and enjoy what the Clubhouse has to offer.

We look forward to seeing you at the Club and building on the wonderful support the members have provided the Club throughout the difficult last 4 months.

Temporary Local Rules – Covid-19

With the recent increase in Covid cases in Victoria and NSW the Match Committee have decided to re-instate the temporary local rule requiring flagsticks to be left in. As such the current temporary local Rules as a result of Covid are as follows;

Rules of Golf – Temporary Modification

The Royal & Ancient has announced a series of temporary measures that will enable clubs to reduce any hygiene implications related to complying with the Rules of Golf.

The temporary measures are effective immediately and allow the Rules of Golf, and Model Local Rules to be modified as a result of the COVID-19 outbreak.

Scoring

In view of concerns about handling and exchanging scorecards, on a temporary basis, the Club has chosen to allow methods of scoring in stroke play, Stableford and Par that do not strictly comply with Rule 3.3b or do not comply with the normal methods used under Rule 3.3b.  These being;

  1. Players may enter their own hole scores on the scorecard (it is not necessary for a marker to do it).
  2. It is not necessary to have a marker physically certify the player’s hole scores, but some form of verbal certification should take place.
  3. Scorecards are to be returned to the box in the Pro Shop for entry by a member of the Pro Shop staff.

Flagstick

  • Players are to leave the flagstick in the hole at all times.

Bunkers

Bunkers are in play with a 30cm preferred lie available and to be taken within the bunker (all rakes have been removed from bunkers). Members are asked to be mindful of their fellow members and to smooth out bunkers using their foot or the back of your club.  Please ensure that you do not leave foot imprints and/or “divot” marks in the bunker. Note, the bunker surface can’t be smoothed prior to taking a preferred lie.

Daily Bar Menu Available until 4pm on Friday’s

Due to the ongoing popularity of our Tiger Tee Challenge Days on a Friday, the Club will now be offering the Daily Bar Menu catering until 4pm (previously 2pm) commencing Friday 31st July.

The daily bar menu consists of 6-7 made to order meals such as those available on today’s menu (pictured below).

Members are encouraged to utilise this service and invite guests to play golf in the Tiger Tee Challenge and enjoy a nice meal after golf.

Clubhouse Public WiFi now Available

Oatlands Golf Club have just upgraded the Clubs Wifi to provide for a continuous service throughout the Clubhouse and Conference facilities for members and guests to use.

The Wifi name is OGC-PUBLC with the password available on the blackboard behind the bar.

Please feel free to utilise this service whenever you are at the Club.

The Club also offers conference facilities for groups of all sizes.

Ladies Gardening Volunteers

A few of the ladies have suggested they would be interested in volunteering to do some light gardening work around the course and clubhouse.  To this end, we have spoken with Sam Howe (General Manager) and Dom Yates (Course Superintendent) and decided to make the first day to be Tuesday 4th August between 10.00 am and 12.00pm.

If anyone is keen to help out, there will be a sheet in the Ladies Locker Room to register your interest.  Our course is always in a beautiful condition, but at the moment it is getting quite a workout with all the games that are being played.

Our wonderful volunteers that come every Monday and help present the course,  contribute to this in no small way.  We, as Lady Members, thought this could be a small contribution we could make to our Club also.

Thanking you in anticipation of any help you are able to provide.

Kind regards

Lesleigh Perkins

Lady President

Covid Humour – Functional Masks

The Covid pandemic is undoubtedly a serious issue for all Australians, however amongst the uncertainty we need to have a laugh where possible. The video below was brought to the Clubs attention by a member who suggested that in the event that masks become mandatory that our members can still find a way to enjoy a drink in the Clubhouse;
