Saturday 8th February – Competition change due to Weather

At the time of writing the golf course has had 75mm of much needed rainfall in the last 24 hours with even more forecast overnight and into the weekend.

At this point in time, the course is extremely waterlogged, no carts (including medicals) are permitted on course with this restriction likely to be in place all weekend, and the majority of bunkers have been inundated with water.

As such, the Match Committee have decided that the AC Berk Cup will be decided over 18 holes next Saturday 15th February and inconjuction with the February Monthly Medal.

A decision on whether the golf course is closed will be made in the morning, however in the event that it is open and you would still like to play, a stableford competition will be run as an alternative to the scheduled Stroke round.

The bar and kitchen will be open for service for those wanting to get out of the house over the wet weekend.

We appreciate your understanding and hope you enjoy your weekend.

From the Course

Rainfall for the Week: 75mm (as of Friday morning) Rainfall for 2020: 128.0mm   Dam: 100%   Green Speed: TBC

As a result of the very hot conditions last Saturday, some of our greens had some localised dry spots on them that required hand watering throughout the afternoon. By Sunday morning, these areas had improved. Some minor yellowing on surfaces could be seen as a result of the turf going into stress.

Sunday morning we applied insecticide to knockdown adult Argentine Stem Weevil, as well as an insecticide that is absorbed by the plant, and moves systemically throughout the plant to control the larvae of the Argentine Stem Weevil as it feeds off the plant. This application was planned in our program to control this pest, and performed on Sunday as a means of applying additional irrigation to the greens, as these products need to be removed from the leaf of the plant to best target the intended pest.

On Monday morning we applied a fungicide for Pythium protection, with growth regulator also added to the tank mix. With the forecast of wet weather towards the end of the week, we took the opportunity to apply all required applications to greens whilst weather conditions were favourable.

The whipper snippers have been out this week trimming tree bases, distance posts, drainage pits etc. to tidy up areas that our mowers can’t always get to. Holes 1 to 7 have been completed so far, with this work to continue next week. All areas of the course will be cut this week, with a planned full cut of all rough to be completed weather permitting. If rainfall is heavy enough, certain areas will become too wet to cut without causing damage, therefore we won’t be able to perform a full cut of rough lines.

Turf has been laid on the 11th path areas with the predicted rainfall being ideal for this turf to establish itself. We were able to obtain some couch at a reduced price, so the 9th middle tee has been patched as well as the rear pad on the 15th tee.

Our volunteers were back on Monday morning, performing a bunker run before the ladies competition, tidying up the 6th creek line and clubhouse maintenance. Thank you gentlemen for your assistance once again.

We are planning to cut and roll greens on Saturday to best prepare our Major Pennants team members for the conditions that we hope to prepare for them when we host their matches. The final call on this will once again be in Mother Nature’s hands, as we won’t be performing anything to the greens which will be detrimental to their health (at the time of publication cutting and rolling plans have been cancelled due to heavy rain).

Enjoy the weekend!

The Course Team.

Fundraising Golf Day for the Rural Fire Service – Friday 13th March

The Clubs RFS Fundraising Day is fast approaching and the support from members (and staff) has been fantastic. Please see the following updates regarding this event:

  • A guest speaker has been arranged for the event, being Chris Ryder, RFS Manager, Operations Support, Response and Coordination at NSW Rural Fire Service (Superintendent).
  • Donations from members for raffle and auction items have been coming in steadily, thanks to those members who have already donated, more is needed for this cause.
  • The Oatlands bar staff decided to donate their tips from January to the fundraising effort and have raised just under $1,200, well done team.
  • The Club has decided to invite volunteers from the Local RFS units at no charge and are calling for members to sponsor their entry fee ($110pp) all of which will go to the fundraising effort.

The outline for the day is as follows:

7am: Registration including Bacon & Egg Rolls
8am: Shotgun Start – 4 Person Ambrose
1pm: Lunch, guest speaker, presentation and fundraising activities.

Cost: Members – $80pp / Guests – $110pp

All funds raised will go to the families of the NSW RFS Volunteers who were killed fighting the fires.

To donate a raffle / auction item, or to sponsor a RFS volunteer to play on the day, please contact the Club General Manager, gm@oatlandsgolf.com.au.

We hope many members and guests will get involved in this event and help to support the heroic effort of all those involved in fighting the unprecedented bush fires, along with those who have been tragically impacted. Bookings for the event are available via the Club website.

New Putting Green – Please walk around the green unless putting

Members are asked to please walk around the new putting green using the concrete path when walking from the Clubhouse to the Pro Shop.

When leaving the Pro Shop the shortest distance to the Pro Shop is across Northeast corner of the putting green, however constant foot traffic across this line will impact the plant health and wear a track into the green over time. As such, member who aren’t putting are asked to take the slightly longer route of the concrete path to access the Pro Shop.

Your assistance with this is greatly appreciated.

Rules Corner

The Club would like to add a regular Rules update into this Enews including some short videos on the application of some common and not so common Rules.

Rather than the Club GM picking Rules at random from the Rules book, members are asked to email the General Manager (Sam Howe) with the Rules they would like to see explained. Email: gm@oatlandsgolf.com.au

The Club’s Five after Five series has been extended into February due to popular demand.

This relaxed light-hearted event is a great way to introduce friends to the Club and for new members to get a stress free introduction to competition golf.

The new dates will be Friday 7th Feb (cancelled due to wet weather), Fri 21st Feb and Fri 6th March. Bookings can be made online or by contacting the Club’s Reception or Pro Shop.

Saturday Morning BBQ – Cancelled for Saturday 8th February due to wet weather

Please be advised that the Saturday morning Breakfast BBQ for tomorrow (Saturday 8th Feb) has been cancelled due to wet weather and the BBQ not being under cover (and the GM not wanting to get wet while cooking breakfast). The BBQ will be back next week.
