Rainfall for the Week: 17.0mm Rainfall for 2019: 614.5mm Dam: 100% Green Speed: Renovations
Renovation of playing surfaces continued this week, with greens being fertilised on Tuesday and Wednesday mornings and having their first cut on Thursday morning at 5mm. The greens are looking really good, albeit a couple of days behind where we would’ve liked them to be after the rainfall late last week. The cutting height will be lowered by 1mm each week until we are back to our usual 3mm cutting height.
All fairways have had the Ventrac aerator run over them twice now, with top dressing and fertilising taking place each day. The Ventrac performs a double pass over all fairways before we smash up the removed cores with our steel drag mat. Once smashed up, we then blow off any remaining debris from the fairway surfaces. Approximately 30 tonnes of washed sand per hectare is spread over the fairways before also being rubbed in with the steel drag mat. We still have to finish top dressing the 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th, 8th, 10th and practice fairways, which should be completed by Wednesday next week. We have fertilised the 1st, 12th, 13th, 14th, 16th, 17th and 18th fairways so far, only having a small window of opportunity to complete this work early mornings due to water restrictions and member play.
Our volunteers were on course Monday morning, performing a bunker run in front of the ladies competition, blowing fairways, painting the handrails on the back veranda of the Clubhouse, Clubhouse maintenance and Col McRae aerated the 15th fairway on our Ventrac machine. Thank you gentlemen for your assistance once again!
Enjoy the weekend!

Practice Facility Upgrade – Update
The putting and chipping greens are ready for seeding, with the putting green being sown on Thursday and the chipping green on Friday (underway at the time of writing). We will cover these surfaces with the growth cloth to enhance germination. With favourable conditions, we predict a 10- 12 week grow in period before they will be open for play. The turf around the chipping green will be laid in approximately a week and a half, after we remove the growth cloths.
The concrete paths were laid on Tuesday and will be open for access on Saturday (tomorrow) morning. The fencing around the greens will stay in place for another week or two to prevent trespassers crossing over the new greens.
We would like to thank Donohoe Earthmoving and Construction for their diligence and work ethic during the construction phase of this project. Members would have observed them working from sunrise to sunset on most days which has allowed the project to progress as planned.
There is no updated video of this week’s work as our resident drone pilot (General Manager Sam Howe) was attending the PGA Conference on the Gold Coast. The image below shows the putting green after seeding and covered with the growth cloth and the chipping green ready to be sown.

Oatlands Golf Club Strategy Survey
The Board and Management would like to thank all those members who have taken the time to complete the strategy survey. At the time of writing this, 149 members have completed the survey. The objective is to have 200+ responses by the time the survey closes at 5pm on Friday 13th September 2019.
The responses will help guide the Board and Managements’ development of the Club’s 5 year strategic plan so it is important that members take the time to provide input into the direction of their Club.
The survey is available below.
If you have any questions, please contact the Club’s General Manager, Sam Howe via phone or email: firstname.lastname@example.org
Thank you for your assistance and ongoing support of Oatlands Golf Club.
Happy Hour at the Club – Friday’s 4 – 6pm
Commencing in September, the Club will be running a weekly Happy Hour special on Friday’s from 4 to 6pm.
Happy Hour prices will be $5 on all tap beer schooners and glasses of House red and white wine.
We hope you can join us on a Friday afternoon!
Saturday Morning BBQ – Volunteers Required
The last four Saturday’s has seen the introduction of BBQ brekky and coffee service available for members. This service, which was trialed over August, will continue during September.
The service is being run on a break even basis and as a Member Service which the Board believe, is one of the most important aspects of the Club operations.
At this stage, the BBQ is being operated by volunteers from the Board and Sub-Committees. A number of members have expressed interest in volunteering to assist and as such, if you would like to offer your time to volunteer from 7am – 11am on a Saturday morning to assist with the BBQ, please contact the General Manager, Sam Howe at email@example.com.
We would also like members to know that in-conjunction with the Saturday BBQ, the bar will be open on Saturday morning for coffee sales from 7am. The Club has recently acquired a new coffee machine and all staff are being put through annual coffee training during the course renovation, so if you love your coffee as much as me (GM, Sam Howe), then please consider the Club for your Saturday morning wake up coffee.
Bacon & Egg Rolls: $5
Regular Size Coffee: $4.50
B&E Roll with a Coffee/Beer: $8/$10
The Club would love to see this service become a permanent fixture for Saturday morning golf with a view to expanding in to other competition days, so please show your support and have your brekky at the Club before you play.
Mixed Pennant – Expression of Interest
The Club is calling for nominations for the annual Mixed Pennant Competition, to be run in early 2020.
The event is a matchplay Pennant format with teams of 10 (5 mixed pairs) representing each Club.
If you are interested in representing the Club in this fun Pennant competition, please email the Club General Manager, Sam Howe at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Specific dates for the competition will be decided toward the end of January.
Call Up on Par 3s
Members are reminded of the need to call up on all Par 3s to assist with Pace of Play. Calling up alleviates congestion behind your group and also allows the group in front to get out of range. This creates better flow on the golf course and a more enjoyable round for all.
Calling up on the 12th hole is particularly important, with timesheets starting at 7 or 8 minute intervals, getting the 12th tee away on time is very difficult if groups don’t call up. The reason for this is that play for a par 3 takes 12-13 minutes which is obviously longer than the starting intervals. Calling up once you get to the green (which on average is after 6-7mins) allows groups to get away on time.
To gain the benefit of calling up requires all groups to look for the opportunity to do so rather than looking for the opportunity to finish out without calling up. If all groups call up on Par 3s then round times can be reduced by 10-15mins and the overall flow of the course is greatly increased.
Thank you for your assistance!
