Weekly Communication

Welcome to Week One of the new communication schedule for Oatlands Golf Club.

This Enews communication will focus on interest pieces around the Club.

Next week’s communication will be a Captain’s Letter with a focus on course matters, competition results and upcoming golf events, and topical rule issues.

Week 3 will be a forthcoming events communication giving members greater detail around the upcoming events on offer at your Club such as Bistro on Bettington, Mother’s Day, State of Origin, etc.

Week 3 will be a dedicated Pro Shop communication giving insight into “What’s On In The Pro Shop”, tips and hints from our PGA staff, equipment reviews, and anecdotes from the world of golf.

We trust you will enjoy the revised format for communication which we hope will make the content more relevant and easier to digest as opposed to trying to fit all content into a single generic weekly communication.

As always, member feedback on Club communication is encouraged. Please provide any feedback, or content ideas, to the General Manager, Sam Howe at gm@oatlandsgolf.com.au

Getting Started Programme – Introduce a Friend or Family Member to Golf at Oatlands GC

This time around, we are running two session in-conjunction, one on a Sunday and one on a Thursday.

These sessions are open to any non-member referred by a current member of the Club, and are a fantastic way to get an introduction to golf in a relaxed setting, and with other newcomers.

Details of the programme are outlined below:

Sunday Programme:

  • 8 consecutive weeks excluding Fathers Day (1st Sept) and Labour Day weekend (6th Oct)

From the Course

Rainfall for the Week: 0.0mm             Rainfall for 2019: 409.55mm        Dam: 100%         Green Speed: 10.5 feet

This week a number of projects have been progressed, with the flyover area on the 8th being lowered to a level which should allow members to see where balls land if hit in the area behind the 10th green. This will continue to be reviewed and adjusted if required.

All weeds in bunkers have been sprayed, the 10th fairway bunker has been repaired and the LHS practice bunker will be repaired by the weekend if we don’t receive too much rain.

We have also started moving the piles of mulch stored up on the 11th rough line near Oatlands House driveway. We have moved some to the other side of this fairway beneath the fairway bunker, and also refreshed a previous mulched area beneath a tree between the 1st and 17th fairways. The planned mulched area between the 13th, 17th and practice area will be poisoned out next week in preparation for mulch spreading the following week.

Growth on fairways, tees, collars, aprons and roughs has slowed down somewhat this past week with the overnight temperatures falling. This will enable the team to reduce mowing frequency of these surfaces and allow them to start other planned projects.

We’ve had a fuel spill first thing Friday morning on the 17th green. This is unfortunate, however despite the robust systems in place, occasionally mistakes can occur.

There’s not a lot that can be done for the turf as the fuel immediately burns the affected turf. This turf will die, therefore some plugging and patching will need to be performed in the coming weeks once we see the full effects. We will also scarify and mini core the affected areas and use green sand to disguise the effects of this spill. We are fortunate that there is still some growth occurring and therefore the impact should be minimal. The team have met as a group and reviewed what has occurred and will make the necessary adjustments to continue to reduce the risk of these accidents.

One hectare of fairway bare areas has been treated this week for mites and leaf spot disease. This hectare worth of insecticide and fungicide only covered the 1st, 12th, 13th and 17th bare areas, so we have ordered another 2 hectares worth to continue treating affected areas. We should start to see some colour improvement in these areas in the next fortnight, with some minor recovery growth as well.

Volunteers were back on course on Monday after a 2 week break, raking bunkers before the ladies competition, cleaning up the 6th creek line of weeds, removing signs from garden beds, blowing fairways and clubhouse maintenance work. Thank you very much for your efforts gentlemen and it was great to have you all back helping out again, we have definitely missed you all!

Enjoy the weekend

The Course Team

Masters Pennant

Last Sunday the Masters Pennant opened their season with a home match against Windsor Golf Club. On paper the teams were very evenly matched, and early on we knew the result was going to be close.  The Oatlands team suffered 2 early losses, but these were quickly reversed with 2 good wins to Tony Jackson and David Singh.

On debut for Oatlands, Mark Foley fought very hard to secure his match on the 18th hole.  When Windsor levelled  the match the final result would depend on the last match, the number 1 pairing,  playing the last hole.  Unfortunately the result was not to go our way, and Oatlands was defeated 4 matches to 3.5.

The team has the next 2 weeks off before their next game against Northbridge.  Special thanks to the course staff for the outstanding condition of the course.

Pennant Player Profile – Luke Mason

Luke has been a member at Oatlands GC for almost 10 years, and in that time has established himself as a stalwart of the Major Pennant Team. Outside of Golf he is interested in Food, Wine and Travelling as much as he can. He loves playing the guitar and watching the Dragons blitz it for the first half of the year, but his real passion is playing competitive golf with the Oatlands’ boys and the banter that goes along with it. Luke is a popular figure amongst the Pennant Team and the wider membership.

St. Hallett Day Review

The Board and Match Committee are undertaking a review of the Club St. Hallett Day. This event is held 1-2 times a month and is open to members and non-members alike. The golf course is setup from the back tees with any player scoring 36 points or more receiving a dozen Titleist golf balls. While this event is very popular with the 40 – 50 regular participants, numbers for the field have been stagnant recently and below the desired number for an event that showcases the golf course at it’s best to both members and non-members alike.

As such, we ask members if they could please provide feedback on the event by filling in the form below. The form also asks if anyone is interested in sponsoring the event. Sponsorship is not a large commitment, primarily the supply of a unique prize for the achievement of a particular score (format subject to change) and the Club is looking to increase the exposure of a proactive Club member’s business through the regular Enews, wesbite and on the day collateral used to highlight the event.

Thank you for taking the time to complete the question below. If you have any questions relating to this, please direct them to General Manager, Sam Howe at gm@oatlandsgolf.com.au.
