Oatland’s Enews – Friday 8th February 2019

Cart Use

Unfortunately, I find myself (again) needing to write to all members about cart use at Oatlands Golf Club.  I am seeking the assistance of all members in relation to an increasing problem with the use of motorised carts at Oatlands.  Recently it has become evident that some users are not adhering to the Club’s cart operating policy and as such the course has received damage to playing surfaces.  On numerous occasions I have fielded questions and complaints about carts being driven too close to greens, tees and even on to tee boxes.

I am asking all regular cart users to pay special attention to the cart rules displayed on each and every cart and those listed in the Professional Shop. In particular can I ask that you:

  • stay on paths when paths are available, especially around tee boxes (eg. 5th tee through to the green);
  • stay outside the marked yellow lines around greens.  If the yellow line is not present please keep carts at least ten (10) meters from greens;
  • follow directions of ground staff by steering clear of roped off areas;
  • display a high level of awareness of the condition of the playing surface, keeping carts off wet areas to avoid damage as much as possible.

Your assistance and compliance with these guidelines is appreciated.

Social Play

A quick reminder to all members relating to social play here at your Club:

  • To ensure fairness on the course, members are required to ALWAYS report to the pro-shop prior to commencing play, and priority will always be provided to members who have booked their round on the time sheets.

Additionally, members must observe the following club rules when on the course for a social game:

  • Holes must be played in order
  • A maximum of 2 balls can be played
  • Maintain a good pace of play.  It should take no longer than 4 hours 15 minutes to complete your round
  • All play is always from the designated tees of the day
  • Always repair all divots on the course
  • Always repair all lob marks on the greens.  (Repair your own lob mark plus another)
  • Always rake the bunker after use, leaving the rake on the base of the bunker in the direction of play

Mixed Pennants

It was a tough day at the office for the team who suffered a 5-0 loss last weekend to Massey Park at Massey Park.  Hopefully they can turn that around on Sunday when they play Springwood at Springwood.

Major Pennants

The Sydney Metropolitan Major Pennant begins on Sunday 10th February.  We will be playing Monash Golf Club at Monash.  The boys would greatly appreciate the support of any members able to offer their time to caddy.  Please contact the office to register your availability.

Volunteers

Time gets away from us, but we are only about five (5) weeks away from autumn course renovations (March 18th & 19th).  Our process is refined, but we kindly ask any member who may have a spare few hours to assist with this process. If you have the time, please reach out to the Club through the main office or via email admin@oatlandsgolf.com.au to register your availability.

Lost Property

A reminder to all members that any lost property is to be returned to either the Professional Shop, Bar or Administration Office. Please ensure that lost items are reunited with their owners.

There has been several instances of clubs and other items that have not made it back from the course to the Clubhouse/Pro Shop and then to the owners. It is very disappointing to hear these stories.

On The Course

Rainfall for the week: 11.5mm          Rainfall for 2019: 73mm                 Dam: 65%        Green Speed 8.5 feet

As planned, Gordon and I entered the 13th pond on Monday to manually remove as much of the duckweed as we could before herbicide spraying was started. We spent the best part of 5 hours performing this task, and really thinned the coverage of this weed from the ponds surface. The recommended herbicide has been applied and this morning we were pleased to see that the herbicide treatment was starting to take effect. We will continue to treat the weed with this herbicide before starting phase 3 of the exercise which is adding beneficial bacteria pellets to the water which feed on the decaying weed as it sinks to the bottom of the pond.

All greens were verti-drained this week with solid needle tines to provide some much needed oxygen to our root systems. The extended period of high humidity is ideal for disease infection to occur, as plenty of other courses have been experiencing lately. Our greens remain healthy with the needle tyning this week only being beneficial for them. Pellets containing bacteria will be added to the 13th pond which will feed on the decaying weed as it sinks to the bottom of the pond.

The Course Team

Volunteers

Volunteers were on course Monday, cleaning up under the palm tree on our Niblick Cres blocks, blowing fairways, replacing distance posts on the 10th, 13th, 14th and 15th fairways, cleaning and repairing the front entrance signs, stick picking and performing repairs and restoration works to the Clubhouse where the exhaust fan caught on fire. A big effort this week from all involved and much appreciated from all Oatlands staff members!

George Isaac – Club President

The Ladies 2019 golf season got off to a great start last Thursday,31st January, with morning tea first thing in the morning followed by reports from both the Ladies President and Captain and also our Veterans Delegate.  We were very fortunate to have John Bowring attend our Opening Day and give a presentation on the new rules that came into play this year.  This was an excellent opportunity for the ladies to acquaint themselves with the new rules, as our Pennant Teams start to take to the fields in early March.  So a very big thank you to John!

We conduct a raffle on this day with all proceeds going to our two charities.  The winners were Carol Hancock won first prize, 2nd Prize went to Leonie Gutherie and 3rd prize was won by Jan Rogers.  Congratulations to all winners.  We raised in excess of $500 on the day and I thank everyone for their support.

From here on in golf gets serious with our first round of Stroke to take place on Thursday 7th February.  Good luck everyone and happy golfing.

Lesleigh Perkins – Lady President
